Question about lab work and Upper GI

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have a question about having my blood work done. I have my upper GI scheduled for 11-23 and the last thing is my lab work. Because I will not be given a surgery date until all of these things are done, my question is when should I have my blood work done? How long are the results good for? I have been told 2 weeks prior to surgery or up to a month. Not sure which is correct though. Does anyone have any input on this? Also, how tired were you after the upper GI? Did you have any problems with it?

Thanks!

Not sure about the lab work...I had my first round of labs just to check Vitamin levels, liver function tests and such this was at the start of my 3rd supervised weight loss. I have another set due 1-2 weeks prior to surgery date.

The upper GI was tough for me. I was told it was worse than an EGD but I'm not sure. For me I had to drink a super fuzzy type of drink like poprocks and soda and down that super fast. Then I had to drink this nasty glue like substance pretty quickly as well. Then I laid on the table and had another substance that was thinner and drank that thru a straw and twirled around on a table.

It was over in maybe 10 minutes. It was gross but manageable. The tech told me that many times patients get constipated and make sure to drink lots of Water afterwards. I did but I had the complete opposite and was sick the rest of the day. The substances went right through me in no time.

I just had my labs done yesterday and the nurse told me that it takes around 3 weeks for the results to come back from all of the tests - 14 big vials of blood - glad I brought a string cheese to eat, still staggered out of the office after sitting for 15 minutes lol.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
