Why am I so hard on myself?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So when I got the band on July 8th, I made the commitment that I wouldn't get obsessed about the number on the scale. That I would do everything I could and how ever much the number went down each week...I would be okay with it. So I weighed today...2 weeks post op and I've lost 9 lbs. But I was kind of dissappointed thinking...holy cow I've lived on liquids for 2 weeks and that's it? I actually laid down on the bed and had a huge cry and I don't know why. 4.5lbs a week should be great to me...but I feel like I have to lose this weight...and the 10,000 dollars can't have been wasted. Gosh I guess I'm just having a hard day or something...I'm just terrified....what if I fail? I don't really feel any restriction and I know it's because the liquids are just passing through. Is it normal that I can eat about 1 and a half cups of Soup and not really feel terribly full?

Okay...thanks for letting me have my moment.

I have read numerous posts from bandsters who retained Water and excess weight from the surgery for a few weeks afterwards. Your weight loss might take off when you go to mushies and solids...especially if you add exercise to your regimen.

Hiya Time2Live...

no worries, my friend. Your emotions are just completely out of whack...so virtually ANYTHING (even if illogical) is going to set you off into highs and lows....mostly lows right now. Hence your unexpected cry....you'll have more too! But don't fret about it...just know that you can chalk it up to the anesthetic. For most people, the residual effects of it include "sadness" and unpredicatable emotions (usually on the down side) for a few weeks. This happened to me and many others on here and my doc told me that it was a recognized side effect. Knowing that actually helped me a lot when all of a sudden, for seemingly no reason...or a mild reason I would get all sad and have a big cry (not something I normally did or am normally like!). After about 6 weeks it stopped.

:)

Most people lose a ton of Water weight on the pre-op diet. It's not natural to continue that rate of weight loss. After banding, you lose the fluids from the surgery and, by the second week, start losing fat. This trend continues for most people at the rate of 1-2 pounds a week. You're right on track and won't feel restriction until you have a fill or 2-3.

Toss the scale in the closet and weight once a week at most. You're doing fine and did not "waste" your money.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me too except I felt better after about 2 weeks. (But, I had already had anethesia once before so maybe it left my system sooner??) Any way, I was really freaked out thinking the same thing..."I'm messing this up." "It's not going to work for me." "I made a mistake." and then I'd just start crying. I was about a day away from calling the pshyc doctor that I had to see pre-op then one day I woke up and felt better. It was the strangest thing. If it doesn't "clear up" then I'd talk to your doc and see if you need to see someone because I've been told that post-op wls patients can see emotional issues that they didn't know existed suddenly pop up...and there's nothing wrong with that. So, for now try to hang in there but don't hesitate to get help if you need it.

By the way...9 lbs in two weeks is awesome. The whole liquid thing didn't do a darn thing to me so you're exceeding what I'd say is the "norm". liquid diets are hard on your body, that's why we don't do them regularly. The purpose was to prep your liver for surgery and my doc didn't expect any real weight loss to begin until after you make the transition back to regular food. You're cool...so just hang in there!!

Time2live,

You are gonna be just fine....just like everyone said...its post surgery-blues. You could have had a different type of anesthesia for this surgery than what you had in the past...you know the FDA always bringing out new and "improved" stuff! You're doing awesome with your weight loss!! My doc told me that lap bandsters only lose 1-2 lbs a week so no worries if it seems slow -its normal.

Take care!

I went thru the same exact thing in the beginning...I lost quite a bit of weight in the last couple weeks then it stopped for about 3 weeks without a pound gone...My dr explained to me that your body is going thru a "starvation period" where it thinks its starving so it stores everything that it can...When your able to add a little bit more food and your body figures out what its suppose to be doing it will start coming off again...I just went thru it all, and I know that its totally depressing...Chin up, it will happen!!

9 LBS in two weeks is awsome!!! Look at it like this, if you did that for 20 weeks you would be close to 100lbs.. When you look at the BIG picture its amazing!!! Although that is not a healthy loss long term, its wonderful short term. good job!!!

Just so you know, your feelingare not unuausl. Many people experience post surgical (post-op) depression. You aren't being hard on yourself. Here's an article which I found for you....

Depression after Surgery

Depression and/or anxiety are often experienced after surgical procedures, at various times post operatively (immediately or months later). Intensity can range from mild dysphoria to major depressive symptoms. John Lauerman in the January 2000 issue of Harvard Magazine, addresses this topic in "An Understandable Complication...Coming to terms with postsurgical depression." The article talks about emotions before surgery as being expected and often handled quite well. Problems can also crop up in the recovery period which are not expected. After major surgery, according to the article, feelings of mortality, of loss, and of vulnerability can be profound." Shortly after surgery, depression can be attributed to pain, a problem with anesthesia, a sense of loss or another underlying cause. Post-operative depression, well after the crisis of surgery, can make it difficult for patients to cope with what they have endured. There might also be uncertainty about the future, or lack of understanding on the part of individuals close to them. This article points out the importance of communicating feelings of depression to medical professionals who may not be alert to symptoms, in order to have all possible causes of depression investigated.

I hope this helps you.

Just remember, we didn't get fat overnight and we aren't going to get thin in a week, either.......Nine pounds is a great start, and you are on track. If you lose too quickly, it is hard on your body and organs. Slow and steady is the best way to go. Don't get discouraged. Start walking and stay focused. You have lots of people rooting for you!!!

Hon, you've been given some great advice. Please don't be so hard on yourself.

The band works for most people, so your chances of it not working are very, very remote. Courage dear-heart! Just so you know, in a couple of days or so, you might start having a freak-out moment where you will start to wonder just what the hell you did to yourself. (it usually happens with in the first couple of weeks). Sort of "AHHHHHH! WHAT THE HELL DID I DO TO MYSELF!!!!???!!!!"

You will get through this.(((hugs)))

shoot girl I would kill for 9 pounds LOL I have only lost 2 since surgery on the 10th. It is frustrating. But I am wearing a shirt today that did not fit when I bought it. And it looks awesome on me now. And I wore one last night like that too. Don't worry, step away from the scale, and relax some. just focus on healing and going through the food stages. Then you can focus on your weight after your first fill.

Thanks all so much for the encouragement. I've had a few blue moments here and there but I'm feeling much better overall. I'm just not going to obsess about the scale.

Vines I poured through your journal and just want you to know....so much of what you say is so inspiring to me. How you choose to live your life through all its challenges....just really makes me want to strive to be more.

Anyways...enough babbling....I'm off to eat something...lol.

I lost 10 lbs. on my post-op diet and thought I would drop a huge amount afterward. I haven't lost what I thought I should, but the nurse had told me that the IV fluids would prevent the weight loss, and to just roll with it. I bet one of these days you just wake up and poof some of that weight is gone. Good luck to you.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
