Anything you wish you have known/done before surgery that you didn't?

Recommended Posts

Oil sooner great topic. I was just sleeved on Nov 1. For me I wish I had known or thought to ask specifically about the surgery more. I saw my surgeon once prior to surgery day. During the pre-op meeting I had a list of 9 questions and he had a cold and could barely talk. He told me that if he felt he could not perform the procedure he would not. So with cold and flu upon us make sure your doctor is well or you know their contingency plan :)

The ONE question that I did not think to ask was, once the large lobe of stomach is removed how does that impact the other organs that are in place? I did not think about the stomach relevant to the spleen which is now more exposed. I am not an extreme sports person but it is just something I wish I had time to consider (not that it would have made me change my mind).

I wish I had known that I would be dry heaving for 48 hours after surgery (though that's probably uncommon), and how hard it would be to go a month without solid food.< /p>

Hi all! My advice is to not over pack, to have someone who cares about you there most of the time, and to remember that the first month after surgery is the hardest because you don't have any energy at all, you're trying to get in as much liquid and protien as you can which is extremely hard and can be discouraging. Most of all, try to remember while you're going through the first month that things will get better and that you will soon learn to love your sleeve and yourself too.

I wish my head would have caught up to my surgery (actually there are times I am still waiting for this).. The mindset of "having" to eat really messed with me, to the point I was trying to force feed myself in the first few weeks out... How silly in hindsight now to think that going 2-3 weeks with water/protien shakes and few protien meals would not be enough! I was too accustomed to eating 3 big meals a day...

Enjoy the first 12 weeks... your are healing and do not force feed yourself despite what your head may be telling you!!!

In the hospital, one thing that saved my sanity was my iphone. I didn't make any calls, but I did listen to music with noise blocking ear buds. It really helped me rest.

Maybe it's cheeky, but I wish I had done this sooner! Before my health issues started.

Also, I took too much "stuff" to the hospital and then had to pack it all back home. I didn't use my laptop, just my iPhone and I didn't read any of the book I took to the hospital. I also never put on "my" nightgown or any makeup. Since I only spent one night, I left the hospital too quickly to really use any of that stuff. I DO wish I had taken my body pillow (would have made laying on my side more comfortable because of the support) and I was very happy that I took my cape, which doubled as a blanket and a cover-up for when I was walking.

I wish I had looked at my liquid pain meds and known what the metric to english conversion was for it. Because I didn't, I had to spend the night I came home from the hospital in pain. I still haven't opened the bottle.

I also bought too much Protein powder and I didn't need the baby food that I bought "just in case". The Protein Powder is being slowly used up, but I really didn't care for the taste just after I came home.

Lastly, GO TO THE SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS if your doctor/hospital/center offers them. They have been invaluable for the support of the other sleevers, even though I'm not super fond of the psychiatrist who runs ours. I've learned almost as much from those folks as I have learned here.

I'm 58 yr. young. Boy oh boy, i wish i had my WLS 30 yrs ago (dinasour (msp)era :nonod: i now have all these health issues, oh well, whats done is done,. So anxious for my surgery 12/6/11.

I've gone to one support group so far. I was disappointed because just about everyone that was there were pre surgery like me :nonod: I was hoping to hear words of wisdom, and get some questions answered.

As far as what I'm gonna bring to the hospital, i primarily will me, myself and I. DH is coming too. I don't think i'll be able to concentrate on anything, and probably be in pain.

BTW - why does your side hurt so much/?? Don't understand that one.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
