I'm starving on "clears"- will I be starving/loopy after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 24 hours in to be liquid/clear portion of my diet (YAY! Just 3 days away :D) but I've felt loopy, low energy, and hungry all day.

I'm worried I will feel loopy from the lack of calories I intake after surgery. What has your experience been? Does your body seem to adjust?

I am also concerned about the hunger, but I assume having a huge portion of my stomach (and the ghrelin producing portion of it gone) will make that an unlikely, or lessened issue.

What are your thoughts? Does feeling light headed stop once your body adjusts to the major deficit in food/calories, or is this just part of it?

You won't feel hungry after surgery and the clears that seem so inadequate now will seem like manna from heaven afterwards. :)

You may have "head hunger", but your sleeve will quickly help you avoid overeating.

Good luck!!!

I struggled with "head hunger" while I was on the clear (and later full) liquids diet after surgery. But, I felt no physical hunger at all. I mourned food and mentally wanted to eat, but I didn't have any extreme headaches or hunger pangs that come with real physical hunger.

It's only for a few weeks, though. It's worth it :)

Thats good to hear about the clears feeling sufficient after! "Manna" is funny, because I've been adding manna (a paste made of pure coconut) to my Protein shakes, now that I'm on clears I miss it! LOL...quite coincidental ;)

I am hoping I feel alert and "with it" at some point in the days after surgery. I expect to feel a bit out of it for the first few days, but I'd hope I wouldn't have to put up with being an airhead until I'm on "full" liquids and able to get some Protein in.

Luckily the clears phase wasn't too long for me and it included some things that I didn't really think of. I was allowed Jello, Popsicles, broth, Decaf tea. I also found these sugar free italian ice things that were the best thing ever. It was dairy free and it made me feel like I was eating ice cream. Just remember that you will only be in this phase for a short time and full liquids is so much better than Clear Liquids. You can get through this!!

LOL that you've been putting manna in your Protein shakes! I have a book that my doc puts out, about 50 pages or so, with sample menus and lists of foods that are allowed at certain points. On "clears" I was allowed SF pudding, SF popsicles, SF Jello, broth, etc. I fondly remember the bowl of egg drop Soup that I drank, avoiding the solids, not long after surgery. For some reason, that bowl of Soup was so delicious...and I could only drink about 2 oz of the liquid.

You will find things that work for you after surgery. My tastes changed very quickly afterwards. I haven't had cow's milk since day 2 post-op and green tea still tastes like plastic, IMO. But, I've found other substitutes that work well. You will as well.

The pre op is the worst! I was dizzy, hungry and had a headache the whole time. You will not be hungry

after surgery.

hi - i am one month before WLS - i never heard the express "head hunger" but if it means what i think it does, i like the expression. Does it refer to something like - yesterday i had 3 meals, later at night, my stomach was full, but i just wanted to chew, eat something cuz thats what i used to do while watching the tube? The hunger lost, i won - didn't eat!!! kathy

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
