5.5 days after surgery ... ouch!!

Recommended Posts

hi everyone .. had my vsg this past Saturday ... boy - it was much much tougher than I had anticipated. I wasn't happy w/the nursing care I received and actually checked myself out after 3.5 days .. I knew I would do better at home than if I stayed in the hospital. My tummy is so black & blue it looks like someone hit it w/a tire Iron ... it's pretty gross. But today was the first day I could feel a little better .. still, I have a long way to go. I have a question ... I feel like I'm constantly hungry? Is this normal? I'm definitely not able to get all my Protein & liquids in yet, but each day I'm improving. Tonight I had some chicken broth & mixed some wonton Soup (broth only) in, and it tasted like heaven ... only, now, I'm soooooo full and have felt this way for over 3 hours now ... it took me about 1.5 hours to down a cup of the broth, but wow ... I have been soooo full since, did I do something wrong? Pls. advise ... thanks so much. RG

When you are at the liquid food stage it is normal to feel hunger more often as the food you are getting is in liquid form and is digested faster. When you get to the puree stage it won't feel the same.

Hi there,

I am only three days out, but I am not hungry at all. I get pains in my belly that i am associating more with gas than anything else. I wasn't released until 3pm yesterday so my first attempt at Protein was last night, I got about 10 grams in. Today I have already gotten 48 grams with my powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup and a Chilke strawberry Protein powder shake. I pour each ounce in one of the ounce size plastic cups I got in the hospital and sip, slooowwly LOL. I start getting a bit of a burpy feeling and know that I need to slow down or take a break. My body told me pretty quickly what it would be ok with.

Hope taht this helps!

thank you - I appreciate the advice. Today was a little easier than yesterday .. I'm just assuming every day it will be the same (a little easier)

Gee wiz - you're lucky! Me, I keep getting what feels like "hungry" ... all day! It's quite a bummer!

today was a tad better than yesterday ... so am hoping every day it gets easier, which I'm feeling it should after reading everyone's posts in the rooms.

thanks!

Good luck to you - RG

Are you still on Clear Liquids only? If so, that is probably why you are still hungry all the time. I'm 4 days post-op and I'm staving or having gas/ burp issues all the times. Clear broth isn't filling unfortunately. I can't wait until I can have a Protein shake! (Strange to say, lol)

Rosiegirl, Ooooo! that brings back memories, I am six weeks post op 24lb lost. I did go through the hunger pang pains to start with but, I was soo sore and washed out with painkillers that I didn't want to really eat.

Now I find through experimenting,( which I know I shouldn't so don't try it!) that all the naughty things go down well and the recommended stuff doesn't!!! I really find it hard to digest meat even if it is pureed...

Here in England when you pay privately, I have found that we don't have to have such rigourous test as in the US

I got referred by my Doctor had a consultation, agreed surgery was suitable then made the appointment for surgery, in done!!! six weeks check up, "is all ok," I said "yep fine", see your doctor in a week get some Vitamins and that was that.

I have felt quite at a loss, that's why I was looking for support on the web!

Like you I left hospital after 3 days, better at home improved really quickly in my own environment.

Well at least we are done now and things can only get better, onwards and upwards, stay strong and slowly but surely!

Take care and best wishes Lady Ann

I am six days out of surgery, go to Dr tomorrow to have the drain removed.... I am on clear liquids for 2 weeks .period. then I move to purreed for 2 weeks..... the warm chicken broth is wonderful.. it fills me up but i love the warmth. I am walking more and more everyday. Still very sore and need help getting up and down off recliner and bed. I am thinking I will take a 3rd week off work, just to get stronger and to be able to try on some clothes before Monday :) Best of luck to you....it will get better

thanks for the well wishes -- today is 9 days out ... and I'm feeling much much better every day now .... I started taking the prilosec and that really helped w/the hunger pain -- I think maybe it was acid pains ... but anyway, thank you so very much for all your words of wisdom!

I go back to the doctor this week on Thursday, so we'll see how he say's I'm doing ... then next week, can start mushies! Yeah - can't wait to have some cream of wheat!!! :-)

thanks & keep feeling good!

RG

did you have your surgery in NJ by any chance? I didn't have a drain, but I know someone who did & had their surgery in NJ ... I think every doctor must do things his/her own way ...

good luck to you ... I hope you are feeling better all the time!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
