Can I choose the VSG with Kaiser Permanente

Recommended Posts

I just started my journey. Im so exited! I am having the WLS by Kaiser Permanente in so california. Anyone from the orange health pavillion? My main concern is that the dr's decide which surgery you get. I have my mind and heart set on the VSG. I have made a some research and watched endless youtube videos from sleevers. I hope that the surgeon approves the sleeve.

I had mine through Kaiser so cal...did the classes at the orange health pavilion. I went to Pacific Bariatric in San Diego with Dr. Taller. The doctor I went to see at Kaiser told me that I would have to have a bypass, but Dr. Taller felt that the sleeve was the better choice for me. They will also let you change surgeons if you're not comfortable with what they tell you.

I'm going through WLS Kaiser and have my date on 10/17/11. When I had my first appointment with the surgeon, he discussed the options with me and asked which surgery I was interested in. We agreed and it's set. You always have a choice. If you are not a good candidate for one, then they would probably refuse because it's for your own health and safety but you don't have to do anything you don't want to. Good Luck!

I had my surgery at Kaiser Richmond and YOU CAN pick your surgery. They will suggest to you what surgery they think is best (for me it was VSG), but it is your option.

If you chose something that was not right for you or would kill you, obviously they wouldn't do it, but VSG is pretty safe for all!

Good luck to you !!

Agree. You do have a choice with Kaiser. I too am a Kaiser patient.

I did go in wanting the RouNY. But my surgeon thought the sleeve would be best for me because I am considered high risk. I agreed with him and now I will be sleeved on Oct 25th!!

Good luck to you!

You get to choose, met with Dr. Belzberg at South Bay and he went through options. Suggested since I only had 50 or so pounds to lose to go with Sleeve instead of Bypass.

I am also with Kaiser. The one I go to is in Downey. That is where I attended 12 weeks of the option classes. Since they don't do bariatric surgery there, I am having it done at Kaiser South Bay, in Harbor City. By Dr. Edward Mun, who I understand is one of the best surgeons in the country for this type of surgery.

I went in, wanting the RNY, but Dr. Mun thought the sleeve would be best for me because I am considered high risk do to some other health factors.

So yes, you do get to choose. But a GOOD doctor will also tell you his/her opinion and help guide you into a surgery that is best for you to succeed!

Good Luck to you!

P.S. Sorry about the double post! I hadn't realized I had already commented on this thread...

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
