Hiatal Hernia Repair with the VSG??

Recommended Posts

The dr is going to fix my hiatal hernia when I get my sleeve done, and now I heard that I won't be able to throw up after he does that. Has anyone else had this "fix" done?? What am I in for here?? I have severe GERD and have Barrett's esophagitis now with the hiatal hernia, so I really need it fixed...any thoughts??

I had my hernia fixed with my sleeve surgery and when I had the flu, I vomited just like before. Did your surgeon tell you this??

One of the girls in our pre-op class was talking about it....was just wondering. Thought it would be pretty terrible not to be able to throw up!

i also had my hernia repaired during surgery...didn't even know I had one till afterwards. I will admit I was scared about puking afterwards but I was more concerned about my tummy then the hernia. I just was very careful in eating until I knew I was healed. No biggie-not a fan of doing it but nothing to be worried about. Good Luck.

You are going to hear a lot of goofy stuff from people who don't know what they are talking about and you should probably just ignore them. If it is something that concerns you, ask at your surgeon's office. They hear the common questions all the time and can give you good answers.

Although I haven't "officially" thrown up, I did have a hiatal hernia repaired with my vsg and I have had Water come back up.

I am sure when the time comes, I will indeed be able to urp. ;)

I did have a hernia repair with my VSG and I do not regret it. I did have a rough postop period but in the long run it has been for the best. I had severe GERD prior to the surgery and a VSG alone will cause GERD or exacerbate it if you already have it, according to my surgeon. This is why he chooses to fix the hernia while doing VSG. He also says sometimes a VSG can cause reflux bad enough to justfy converting a VSG to bypass <yikes> The hiatal hernia repair caused me to have terrible hiccups for 2 days that also resulted in a lot of vomiting and caused tearing in my diaphragm from the hiccups/vomiting straining the stitches in my diaphram where he repaired the hernia. I still have a little reflux but it did not start back until about post op day 7. I still take Prilosec OTC but my GERD is much less severe. It would be gone altogether if I hadn't had a VSG, but reflux with VSG would be unbearable without the hernia repair. Catch 22 I guess. So , like I said, I am glad I had the repair in the long run AND I can still vomit like I did before, but I haven't vomited since I got sick taking Lortab elixir postop. You also have to be more careful with lifting and activity after hernia repair with VSG than if you had only had a VSG-according to my surgeon, anyway.

That's awesome info! I have severe GERD also, so it will still be bad after the surgery?? It's so bad now that I have Barrett's esophagitis, and the weight loss is hopefully going to help that. I have to take 2 Protonix and 4 Zantac every day...misery!! I'm ready to be done with that!

It will only still be bad after surgery if you don't have the ernia fixed. My reflux is very mild compared to what it was before. I had issues with swallwoing from esophageal erosion because of the GERD I have had since childhood. I don't have any breakthrough reflux anymore with my medication and I even if I miss a dose, I don't have reflux again until I miss 2 or 3 daily doses. I haven't eaten a single antacid since my surgery! If you don't have the hernia repaired, then yes, according to my surgeon, the reflux can be extremely severe.

Glad I could help and good luck with everything! BTW, if you have a tendency for hiccups now, be prepared to have trouble with them after thehernia repair for a few days. They are very uncomfortable after an abdominal surgery!

I had a hernia repair also.. only bad thing was the hiccups but it didn't cause any damage. I haven't had to throw up but I'm pretty sure if I had to I could.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
