So I have been doing good steadily losing weight but I have been feeling a little more hunger lately and noticed I am eating way too fast. Every time I eat I tell myself not to do this but It seems to happen, doesn’t help I get on 1/2 lunch but any suggestions on how to train myself to eat slower???

The only way I can stop myself is breaking my food into microscopic pieces and chewing the crap out of it. Otherwise, I swear I am going to throw up.

What I used to do is time myself. . . take a bite, swallow, wait 1 - 2 minutes, take another bite, swallow . . . and so on. . . but now at 21 months out i'm back to eating normal. I don't time myself anymore either. . . good luck and just take it easy, it'll come to you.

Can you use music? Do you have anything you can pop in your ears? i POD? I told my NUT that distracted eating worked great for me and it's supposed to be awful. But I'd listen to music I liked. Of course, I was alone when I did this but I'd put on a song, eat a bit, then sing along for a bit, then do another bite. Worked great for me. Thankfully, I did not take this little skill out into public.

I am having trouble with this too. I eat my bites too fast and within three bites, I feel that pressure in my chest and am too full to eat anymore. I am not getting enough Protein or calories this way. I noticed last night, I cooked myself a 2 1/2oz peice of talapia (very small) and I ate it while watching TV. I ate a bite, then I would watch for a couple of minutes and then eat another bite. I almost ate it all and no pressure or feeling too full too quick. It took me about 30 minutes to eat the tiny peice of fish and it got cold but at least I got the Protein in without an uncomforable feeling. I am going to keep trying this approach.

I find it hard to do this when you are out at a restaurant. You tend to eat at the speed of everyone else and on the third bite, you have to stop. I try to wait between bites and no one else is.. they stop and ask every minute if I am ok. I am frustrated with this. I need a distraction so I can eat slower. I do okay at work because I get on the boards then and I will read a little and then eat a bite, and so on.

If anyone else has an idea of how to slow down, I would appreciate it. The old habit of eating fast is hard to break!

I cut everything into tiny pieces and make sure I chew at least 30 times by counting in my head. As I've moved on to denser foods it takes more than 30 to get it all mushed up. I'll also glance at the clock occasionally and if I'm getting through my meal too fast will just put the fork down for a couple of minutes. 7 weeks out and I start counting without even thinking about it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
