Is It Nornal to Lose So Little in the Beginning?

Recommended Posts

I am quite the newbie here.

I know, know, know we aren't to compare weight loss with others, but I do have a question.

I had my surgery on 8/25. I am only down 7lbs. I have to admit, I am let down over this. I was expecting a bit more.

I am still on the full liquid stage. I do get about 75-80oz of Water in and I try to get my Protein. Most days I can only manage 50gr.

I walk on the treadmill 15-20min a day.

I have a couple of friends that have had RNY. They said I need to up my Protein. Last night in a panic I choked down another Protein shake. I took in a total of 85gr of protein yesterday.

I stepped on the scale this morning and was up .5lbs. :(

I am not trying to compare, just wondering of this is normal for some and should I be worried?

I am still having the "what have I done" thoughts. This isn't helping.

Thanks in advance for the help.

That is a little over 1/2 lb a day. What are you upset about? That is great. At that rate, that is 15lbs a month. THAT IS FANTASTIC!!

Celebrate every pound lost and know that you will never see it again!! You are freshly sleeved and probably are holding on to surgery weight. I gained 12lbs during surgery from fluids. It will come off. Don't worry. I have lost 50lbs in 4 short months. It will happen!!

Hello! I understand your frustration. I, too, was a very slow loser for the first month. If you keep your Protein and Water intake where it should be, the weight will eventually begin to melt away. I'm almost 11 mos. post op and have lost about 80 lbs since my day of surgery. Even at a month post op I seriously questioned my ability to shed the pounds other VSG patients do. While others were losing 20+ lbs per month, I was losing 5-10. In the end, I couldn't be happier and I know you will feel the same next summer!

Best wishes on your journey.

Lisa

Hello,

I was sleeved on the same day as you. As of today I have lost 21lbs. What worked for me was, crystal light peach tea flavor. I mixed that in a really big mug type glass. It can hold about 28-30 oz. So I drink a minium 4 glasses a day. That's all of your Fluid intake. I also stuck with just fluids. I really liked the top ramen packets. I didn't eat the noodles just justed the sauce packet for the broth. I also have surgar free Jello, and popsicals. I have been doing this type of diet, because I am still sore inside and sometimes it hurts when a puree goes down. But this is what made me loose some weight within 2 weeks.

Aw, I am sure the scale will keep moving. Try to stay positive.

My pre-op diet only dropped me 3lbs. and after the surgery i've lost 20lbs. Just stay positive and keep up with the liquid diets. They help!

i feel the same way. my surg was on 8/11 and i was 260 and here we are 9/17 and i'm 241 (gained a lb since yesterday) and that's only 19lbs since surg! i get discouraged everytime i think of it bcuz i feel like i really could've done that w/o the surg if i really got my butt in gear. i was expecting to lose so much more, more quickly. i'm doing everything i'm supposed to do and i'm sure i could workout more but even with that lil downfall i still haven't lost much at all. there are some people on here that have lost 50-60lbs in the first month and it's been over a month for me and i've only lost 19! it truly gives me a sad face at times.

I know it's frustrating to read about people who seem to be losing HUGE amounts of weight in the first month or two, if you're not one of them. But honestly, there are so many factors that go into how much you'll lose and how fast. Men lose faster (damn them!). People with a higher starting BMI lose faster. Younger people seem to me to lose faster. People who didn't have a larger pre-op loss seem to lose faster initially (because the first 10 pounds of any weight loss is mostly water). Some people who are losing faster may be losing muscle mass as well as fat, which will slow down their weight loss later (because muscle mass makes your resting metabolism higher). And some people stall earlier, some people stall later.

What's important to remember is, you will lose the weight. It may take longer to come off for some of us (I lost about 15 pounds the first month, 10 the second, and 7 so far in the 3rd month), but it's going to come off, and it will come off consistently, without you feeling like you're starving all the time, and it's going to stay off. Yes, maybe you've been on crash diets where you lost faster, for a little while, and how long did that last?

Stick to your surgeon's plan, give your body the liquids and Protein it needs (you want to keep the protein up so you maintain muscle mass, which will keep your metabolism from slowing down), take a deep breath, and remember it's not a race, and it's not a diet. This is for the rest of your life. You want to be learning good eating and exercise habits, and learning how to live with your new sleeve and eat for life, not live to eat.

And if you're still feeling like a slow loser, check out this thread on slow users unite - you're in good company, and it's full of people who are successful sleevers!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
