My sister and I will be sleeved about a week apart so we are going through this process together. We are very supportive of each other and competitive. Have any other people on this forum had the surgery with a family member or close friend. How did it help or hurt your relationship. Were you competitive with the weight loss? Did having that person motivate you or hinder you?

I had my sleeve gastrectomy on August 9th and I feel wonderful, I had almost no pain even on my first day of surgery and so far I am still feeling great. I am now on stage 2, soft food diet and all is going well I hope this continues as I am very happy with my decision to have the sleeve.

My mom is having surgery on the 25th. I had my sleeve done in April. She has been so supportive along the way and now I'm trying to support her through it. I think we are going to have some friendly competition once she's sleeved. I'm about 4lbs smaller than she is so I know she is going to drop weight so fast. I think it has motivated me alot. I do think we are alot closer, especially once she had to start the liquid pre-op diet. I think it will help overall to have someone to share this experience with.

My daughter had the lap band surgery ayear ago and now I have had the sleeve. we are both supportive of each other but neither of us are competative as we know each person loses at his or her own pace. Good luck I know you will both be very happy with your decision.

Me and a long time friend are going to be sleeved in Mexico on the same day (09/02/11). We have been trying to be encouraging towards each other. We are not competitive with the weight loss. We are trying to encourage each other that we will have great results and we will make it through surgery and back home safe and sound.:D

My sister (2sweetnSugarland) and I were sleeved on the same day by the same surgeon (May 13, 2011). While there was not a lot of competition on our part - there was definately a lot of support. We recovered on the same floor and would walk around the nurses station together. We work out together several times a week at the gym (we started long before we had surgery) It helped to have someone going through this same experience that you love and who loves you.

I don't particularly like competition when it comes to weight loss because no two people are the same and there are so many variables that are a part of losing weight. It is too emotional of a process for me as it is without adding unecessary stress like why did I lose only two pounds and she lost three. Remember it is not a race it is a journey.

(EDITTED TO ADD: I meant this as a reply to 2sweetnsugarland)

I cannot imagine how awesome it must be to have one another during the highs and lows of this journey. That is AWESOME. I have a cousin that lives more than an hour away who had VSG 10 weeks after me and being able to support each other via Facebook has been tremendous support for me. But, having my sister do it with me and be close enough to workout together? That would be incredible. Instead, my sis is four hours away and weighs 145 pounds... if I didn't love her so much, I'd hate her for that weight alone. Did I mention she's 5'11? I got robbed in that part of the gene pool. :P

I think you two are fabulous for leaving the competition out of this journey and focusing on support. Rock on!

Amanda

P.S. Are you guys in Sugarland, TX? If so, I am right up the Grand Parkway in Katy. That would make us sleeve neighbors. :)

We are very encouraging and supportive to each other. The competitive part is just another form of encouragement to keep us going.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
