A question for those who lost 100+ pounds

Recommended Posts

I have been doing alot of reading and alot of watching ppls youtube vids lately and there seems to be common theme. I knew that the first 6 months where the big loss months but it seems as though the majority of the weight you will lose over all is lost in that 6 months as well. Is that the case?

I want to lose at least 100 pounds, to get to my goal I would need to lose 110 as of my weigh in the other day (but TOM is also in town so some of that may be bloating I am not sure) and 130 to get to my docs suggested weight of 160 (large bone structure). I want to lose as much as humanly (and safely) possible during those first 6 months. I see com ppl were able to lose 70+ pounds during that 6 month period. If I lost 70 pounds I would be down below my pre-preg weight with my first child and I would be beyond thrilled (I would still need to lose more to really be healthy but I haven't been below 240 in almost 6 years and my pre-preg weight was 220).

So, for those of you who lost 100+ pounds how much did you lose the first 6 months? And those of you who lost 70+ pounds those first 6 months please share your secrets!! How long everyday did you exercise? What kind of exercise? What did your diet look like? If there was one thing (other than the sleeve) that you attribute your success to what was it? Was there anything you think you could have done differently to lose even more (again, safely)?

Follow your plan and diet. You will lose it easily. Low carb, high Protein and don't cheat.

Edited to add that I was losing 12-14lbs a month pre op by just following that plan. I eat less than half what I used to now that I've been sleeved. I'm not running right now, but I don't consume enough calories yet to really expend too many exercising, but seriously, as long as I stay on plan pre op or post, the weight comes off.

Wow, thats uncanny lol.

I have been considering starting my post-op diet b4 surgery but I keep stopping myself. I know my history and I know that without this surgery no matter how much I lose I will gain it all back in time plus some and I am worried that if I do the post-op diet and lose too much I won't be able to get sleeved anymore and I will just be putting the surgery off even longer :( I know Mexico is less picky since they consider it "elective" surgery but I just don't know. I am also scared that if I try it pre-op and don't get the results I want (which considering my metabolism issues is entirely possible) that I won't put as much effort in post-op as I would otherwise. I am normally not a quitter but with regard to my weight I have tried and failed so many times that it is very difficult to find the motivation to continue once things start going south :( I guess I could try it again. I have done Atkins b4 and couldn't make it through the detox because my body craved carbs and sugar so badly, but I have to detox at some point right, and I have cut back over time so maybe it will be easier this time???We haven't gone grocery shopping yet this month.... I will look into it once I do.

Just remember we all are different, each doc/nut recommend different daily calorie/carb/protien.... but we all know our downfalls in diet and exercise... the surgery helps us tremondously, but we have to put much effort towards losing weight as well.

I know from my past 7 months that Carbs are not my friend and I totally faithfully followed my calorie/carb/protien guidelines for the first 5 months... but if I dare slip just for one meal and have for example bread.... my downfall! A roll or slice of bread... I can tell I am craving more later, I get hungrier easily, its tough... Carbs are not my friend...period.

Below are my stats, I want to reach a goal weight of 150 lbs. Do the math.. it would put me at needing to lose more than half my weight... I have never set an end date to hit my goal...I have my mind determined to be on the path to lose and to "someday" hit my goal weight of 150... I work on this daily, I work on making the right food choices, exercise and push my self to keep pluggin along... it is hard... somedays it is very hard... but then you weigh yourself and see a good loss, or you put on a pair of jeans that you never thought you would fit into and it ALL is worth it!!! Things like this keep your drive going for losing more, and staying on the right path!

Good Luck, your making the right choice for a healthier you!!!!

I have lost a total of 105lbs now. My surgery was on 12/27/10 and I lost 100 just outside of my 6 month marker. My weight loss has slowed down now but I am still losing inches!

I stayed pretty much within the guidelines of keeping up with my 60 grams of Protein a day and making sure i get in atleast 50 ounces of Water.

Yes, I eat carbs, yes, I have Snacks, I can eat everything I use to but in moderation! I have found that the more carbs you eat, the more carbs you will crave. It's a viscous cycle.

I work out 3-4 times a week. I either get on the elliptical for 30 minutes, take a 3-4 mile fast paced walk/run, yoga on Wednesdays with friends or do at home pilates on the tv. I use over the door exercise bands too. I try not to over do it and have found that since losing the weight, working out feels so much better.

Overall, is there anything I would change? Nope! I would do everything again in a heartbeat! Having my sleeve was the best thing I could have done for myself. I am so much happier inside and out.

Good luck sweetheart!!! :D - Tiffany

I jut hit the three month mark and I have lost 62 pounds. I am following the guidelines my doctor set- 60-80 grams of Protein a day, 2liters of Water minimum (I usually do closer to 3), less than 40 net carbs a day, lots of exercise, and my Vitamins. I am carb sensitive so I really need to stick to that one! I walk an hour a day briskly and five days a week do an hour of Water aerobics. I plan to lose at least 50 more.

Follow the rules- you will do well!

You can see my stats in my signature. I would say I would workout more had I had my 6 months to do over again. You can see December totally screwed me, that's when I ate whatever carbs I wanted to, this month will be the same. Keep your carbs under 50 and keep moving are my suggestions!

Follow your plan. Whatever your dr. advises you to do is what you should do!

I see that you said you have not started your pre-op diet yet. Can I advise you to start a.s.a.p?? The more you lose pre-op, the easier it will be on you post-op. Not only for healing, but you will also just be that closer to goal and possibly avoid complications! I lost 55lbs pre-op and my recovery was a BREEZE!!

Good luck to you!

Kelly ;)

Yeah, I saw your vid on YouTube about that :) I have PCOS so I have a feeling I will be carb sensitive as well :/

I have no comorbidities, If I lose enough to get below 40 BMI on the pre-op do you think they would still do it? I really need to e-mail my patient coordinator about that because I know myself well enough to know that any loss right now is temporary and I will end up gaining it back, my metabolism is in the tank so the second I do the tiniest thing I gain a ton of weight so until I get the metabolic reset that the surgery gives you I will never be able to live a normal, non-dieting life and just maintain. I am gonna e-mail Nina...

I pre op dieted below a 40 BMI and they didn't bat an eye. Infact, they were very supportive of my initial weight loss.

I believe they would. From what I know Dr. Aceves minimum is <30BMI so you should still be good to go. I dieted for 2 weeks instead of 1 per his instructions. I'm glad I did! That brought me to 9 Lbs closer to goal and only helped in my recovery process going in already free of the carb demons.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
