Abnormal EKG??? Oh no....

Recommended Posts

Although I am a self-pay sleever, going to Mexico I took it upon myself to do pre-op testing w/ my regular PCP. Everything turned out fine except for one thing. An ABNORMAL EKG!!. She explained that her analysis came up with a bit of an abnormal heart beat, however, she's going to refer me to a cardiologist who can better decipher what's going on an let me know if this will be a hinderance with my surgery. I hope to GOD that this is not the end of the road for me. I so need to do this and I don't think i can take living with a BMI of 43 or more any longer. I'm scheduling to see the cardio doc tomorrow or Friday, so hopefully it's nothing and my cardio can communicate w/ my surgeon and give me the OK. **sigh***

Any one else have an abnormal reading but was still cleared for surgery?

Don't panic yet. I am glad you are getting it checked out right away. Let us know what the Cardiologist says. My first EKG was such that I had to do a stress test and an echocardiogram. Came through both just fine. No issues.

Yes, my EKG showed an abnormality. My PCP sent me to get a stress test. I didn't have to do the treadmill, they just injected some chemical into me that sped up my heartbeat and then stuck me under a machine that looked like a cat scan. Anyway, it came back that they said that my heart was fine and there were no blockages and the abnormality was normal for me. It's just the way my heart works and was fine. I was cleared for surgery and had no problems. Hope this helps.

Phew! Okay guys I saw the cardiologist! And he said in his own words, "There's nothing wrong with you". LOL. I was so relieved to hear that! What he also said though is my weight had a lot to do with why the reading appeared to be normal. Apparently my boobage hindered how the electric signals got through to my heart and back. He ended the appointment with telling me I need to diet and lose some weight. Go figure!

I can relate to your story since I also went to my primary care doctor for testing before I went to mexico for my surgery. I was having chest pains and I also was told I have a small hole in my heart and they heard a heart murmur. I was so depressed thinking I was going to have to cancel my surgery and keep struggling with my weight. My doctor also expressed concern for my weight but I still was not big enough for surgery through my insurance, I had a bmi of 33. My doctor reffered me to the cardiologist who said I was fine and that I could live a healthy life even with the hole in my heart. So I went ahead and had my surgery and now I no longer have chest pains after loosing weight.

I received a call yesterday telling me my EKG was abnormal just five days before my scheduled surgery in Dallas. I've never had an abnormal EKG so I was floored and made arrangements to have it re-done. I'm waiting to hear the results this morning...pretty nervous. Hopefully, it is a bad reading (which happens) or easily resolved. Good luck. I will be watching to see what happens with you.

I just received a call from the cardiologist and my EKG is fine! Appears the first reading was incorrect so I'm glad I had the EKG re-done at a cardiologist's office. These tests are so often misinterpreted if not read by a specialist and jumping straight in to a battery of cardiac tests didn't seem plausible to me. I was able to get right in to my Mother's cardiologist so I didn't burn valuable time had I needed to go ahead with the full range of tests. Simply retaking the EKG was certainly the way to go. My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday and I was not looking forward to postponing. Wheww.

PS...I'm not a doctor but I recommend re-taking the 5 minute EKG anytime there is a question arising from only one prior test.

Great news dallasmom4! I'm glad it worked out for you. I am scheduled for surgery on Sept. 14th so I'll be brining my pre-op tests with me to Mexico so they can compare.

Good luck to you!

As a result of fainting back in April, not required by WL surgeon, I had three cardiac tests: Holder (wearing the monitor for 3 days), echocardiogram and a nuclear stress test. Passed the first two, but "failed" the third. Because of that, I had an angiogram yesterday and he found absolutely no problem. Instead of a possible stent or open heart surgery, I went home in the afternoon. Was so hoping to not have my WLS postponed.

I am glad I had all the tests, but now I realize that they can definitely suggest problems when there are none.

Whew! So glad to hear you're cleared. A postponement was my dread, as well. When is your surgery?

I also had an abnormal EKG but had done a stress test in April that was normal. I just had to send my surgeon a copy of the test and I was cleared for surgery. Woo Hoo. God is great. I am so ready to move forward with the next chapter of my life. Next week cannot come soon enough. This board has been so helpful to me pre-op and I am sure it will be post-op as well. Who knows, at some point I may actually be able to help someone else with their questions. :)

Whew! So glad to hear you're cleared. A postponement was my dread, as well. When is your surgery?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
