getting nervous! Need to vent! Surgery 8/17/11

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am getting really nervous! I am scared that I am gonna regret it! I am scared that I am gonna have complications! I am scared I am gonna miss food! I am scared because my surgeon only did like 4 sleeves! I had to get this off my chest! I have come so far in this proccess! I am proud of myself so far and I am excited about the surgery! I just pray everything goes smooth. I have a 20 month old little girl at home and I want to be a healthy mom, but, i am scared about the surgery! Does anyone else have/had these fears and anxiety!

My family wanted me to get the band, but, that wasnt for me! I know I want the sleeve and after my anxiety, I know I will do awesome!!!

I have a 2 questions!

1. how can you gain weight after the surgery if your portions are so small? I mean, eating regulary, but, smaller portions! does the amount of daily calories change after the surgery?

2. does anyone know anyone or themselves that has had the sleeve surgery for a couple of years? How is their bodies holding up without most of their stomaches? Any long term complications or annoyances?

Thanks for letting me get this out there!

on medifast for 6 weeks, lost 23 lbs!

Hi, Emmas mom. Your anxiety/concerns are quite natural especially since this venture is new, big and life changing and also because your surgeon doesn't have that much experience doing this particular procedure. I would say just make sure it's what you really want. Also, share your concerns with your surgeon, I'm sure he/she can offer some advice. Like you, I'm sure you'll do exceptionally well!!!

I've heard of people gaining weight after having had the surgery and at first I couldn't understand how. My doctor told me that at some point I'd be able to eat just about anything but that I should be mindful because the stomach is a muscle that can stretch and if that happens it's possible to gain weight -- but that won't be our case. We'll both do phenomenally!!!

I don't know anyone that has had the sleeve that long but I'm sure there is someone on this site that has and they'll be able to offer some advice.

Good luck to you, and keep us posted,

Niki

Tiffykins is a couple of years out, so check out some of her posts. She's doing great now, although she did have a leak early on as she was a band to sleeve revision and that carries more risk.

Why are you going to a surgeon that has so little experience?

yes! i definately will check out tiffykins site! thank you for telling me about her! there are 2 hospitals in my area that did the bariatric orientation. i was going to go to albany med., but, they wanted to charge cash for orientation and the other hospital, ellis hosp., did it for free! so i went to orientation with the lapbband in mind. the surgeon who did orientation didnt push the sleeve, just the band and bypass, but, i went home with curiosity about the sleeve and researched it. at this point, my proccess was started! i then met with a different surgeon that is the one i was assigned to and i asked her about the sleeve and she seemed excited about it and drew diagrams and got me excited about it! she said she was bored of doing bands cause of the slow results. Even though she seems confident and goes to meeting on sleeves and talks to other surgeons who do many of them, i have faith in her, but, i still feel anxiety too. but, alot are my own what ifs that get me nervous. like knowing my surgery is so close, i want to eat everything in site! i really do want this but i am my own worse enemy! its frustrating!

emmasmom, first off congratulations on being nervous (guess what? your normal) now you can soooooooooooo easy gain weight back girl! Very simple by eating the wrong foods, cakes, Cookies, ice cream, creams, etc go down sooo good and taste soooo yummy. . . mashed tators, take out food, tastes sooooo good and can go down soooo well too. . .eating a bit now, waiting a while, eating again, and again, and again. . . can be soooo good. . . yes you sure can gain weight and alot of weight too. . . sounds weird but you sure can. . . i've had the sleeve short of 2 years. . . i never made it to onderland, just to 200lbs. . i did go past my goal weight of 212 as per the doctor. . . but i just can't get under the 200 mark. . . that is ok with me cause at 200lbs my daughter says i look like a starved orphan and i wear 14/16. . . I started off at 350lbs. . . so i'm happy. . . i've had no complications to speak of really, and i feel great. . .you can go check out my gallery if you want to see the progress. . . good luck!

When I first met my surgeon in April and asked how many sleeves he had done it was 12. He had been doing them just over a year. However he has done over 650 bariatric surgeries, 2/3 of his practice is this. He is specialized in laproscopic surgery and does NO open surgeries. I asked to meet someone in person who had the sleeve and they set me up with a mentor. She thinks she was 5th or 6th of his sleeves. She is now a year out. I am not sure how many sleeves he has done between April and August but my NUT told me no one is going lapband and all want the sleeve now - problem is a lot of insurances still don't cover it. He was asked in support group this month if he had a favorite surgery to perform and he said bypass. He didn't press me to do one surgery over the other and basically let me choose. I didn't have any co-morbidities and my BMI was high 40's. I think experience isn't just in the particular surgery.

Been eating terrible since the 8th! Today is day 1 of my pre op diet, all liquids! My surgery is wednesday! I was gonna go with albany med but they wanted to charge for the orientation and ellis did it for free! Anywho, my surgeon talks to bariatric sugeons all the time from albany med! she said they do alot there, so, you are in good hands! We should get together and keep in touch through our journey, be each others support! I am from Mechanicville and work in Clifton park! Where abouts are you from? Good luck with your surgery! Hi again! My surgery is at 11:30...have to be there at 9:30! Pre-op diet is just OK! Yesterday I wanted something salty so I drank about 4 oz of pickle juice! Crazy I know...but it satisfied my craving! =) I also cheated once with vegetable Soup...with the veggies! So I hope to do GOOD the rest of the week...or until surgery! Good luck with yours, and we will have to "talk" after surgeries!

Kelly

I have heard great things about Ellis so you are definitely in good hands. Deep breath is right one minute I am excited and daydreaming about how I will look and feel next summer. I think about all of the cute clothes I will buy etc. The next minute I too start second guessing my decision and get very anxious. Everyone tells me what we are feeling is norma and it is so worth it when we get on the other side. I would love to keep in touch. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for Wednesday - you will do great :D When your up to it, let us know how your feeling.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
