Kids say the darndest things

Recommended Posts

So here I am, about 6 1/2 months out, and my own mind still hasn't caught up to the fact that I look a little different than I did. I've lost more than 100lbs, and have gone from a size 22/24 to a size 10 (really probably an 8 now, but havent been shopping). I know that I must look different, but I still don't see it. So this ,morning, my 6-year-old son comes to me, very seriously, and asks me "Mommy, are you one a diet?" As I didn't realy discuss my WLS with my kids, it suprised me a bit, but nonetheless I responded with the "Ive been eating a lot less" answer that I give anyone that asks about the weightloss. Then I ask him why. He tells me that he doesn't want to tell me. At this point, I am so curious at what is going on in his little mind that I just have to know. I ask him again and he again says he doesn't want to tell me, because its mean. Finally, after some encourging and compromising, he says he will just whisper it in my ear. He gets close, and says "Because mommy, you aren't FAT anymore!" I just had to laugh. I had no response for that! I didn't hurt my feeling, but realy suprised me that someone so little and typically oblivious to the world would be so perceptive. Actually made my day!

That's really great especially since he is probably one of the main reasons you did this. I was my 4 year old grandson telling me I was fat that helped motivate me to do something about my weight. I'm just hoping I get the same response you did someday.

My five year old told me I dont look fat with my clothes on anymore, just when I take my clothes off. Gotta love her honesty

I love these "my kids said topics", There should be a section for just good kid quotes. Even the mean ones are entertaining. My 3 year old son told me I couldn't ride in the backseat with him, because I might break the car. LOL. I guess after my sleeve and he gets a little older I can get revenge on the basketball court.

I agree. My 5 year old used to tell me I was fat before the surgery. I told him that although it was true, it wasn't a nice thing to say about people and he could hurt peoples feelings. One day after my surgery he was sitting in the recliner with me and he was trying to feed me a chex mix. I told him no mommy can't have that. He said "Mommy why don't you eat anymore?" I replied remember when mommy went in the hospital? He says yes. I say well they made mommys tummy very small and she can only eat a very little bit. He thinks for a second and says "on the inside?" I asked him what do you mean? He said they made your tummy on the inside small? I said yeah he said oh ok because the outside is still very big LOL.... Oh and he doesn't call people fat anymore. He calls them wide like that is any better hahaaa.

That is soooo cute! My daughter did a simular thing only not as cute. . . I hadn't seen her for 3 - 4 weeks ( shes 21) and upon opening the door, her first words that popped out of her mouth was "God mom, you look like a starved orphan!" Gotta love her

That is so cute! Luckily mine hasn't seen me in the buff, can't imagine what they might have to say. Our kids noticing the difference is one of those NSV's that we dont think of, but is very rewarding. I was always worried that I would be the 'fat mom' at school and that they might be embarrassed. Now, I'm one of the smaller ones, lol

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
