Hi, tomorrow mars my 4th week. I haven't been able to take the Protein shakes for about a week now. They make me nauseated. My stomach feels a bit weird now after I eat. I am thinking this is probably normal. At least I am hoping it is. I am afraid I am not getting enough Protein. So what do I eat? I can have eggs already and I can get two bites down but that is it. Is this normal? I am looking forward to chewing again. But just not sure what to start with.. Any advice???

Hi Patty! I'm only a little over 2 weeks out so I'm not sure that I'm qualified to comment but I thought I might make a few eating suggestions since I will be in the soft food phase in less than a week. I was told that I can have packaged/canned tuna as long as it is tender and can be mashed down a bit. Also, shaved lunch meats, crock pot chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed sweet potatoes... there's are probably other things too. I'm sure that your stomach just isn't used to anything but liquids...I bet it will get easier over time. You're in my thoughts.

Hi, I'm 26 days out and my stomach feels weird too. It's almost like a gnawing hungry feeling. I also have burning along my center chest even when I only eat a bite. I can get 1/2 an egg down. Today I tried KFC mashed potatoes and was able to eat 1/2 of a serving

so that is a little more than usual. I think what we are feeling may be normal for our situation. A friend who had surgery on the same day I did had crab meat the other day and said it is easy on the pouch. Good luck!

I too had a problem with shakes after a few weeks. At 4 weeks I was allowed to have Protein bars which I can deal with a lot better. Here is one that I eat a lot of. They have other flavors if you don't like Peanut Butter and they have 20g of Protein. Also I'm adding a link to some hot chocolate that is really yummy and has 15g of protein. These two are my staple for dealing with lack of protein from food and hating shakes.< /p>

I had the same sensation when I started soft foods, my stomach felt weird, and gas was bubbling up. It got better. Now I'm on to regular food and I am not doing to well in turns of large bits and not chewing enough (food hurts going down). I want to burp after I start eating (it's like the burp is in my throat and I can't get it out... eww). I experience the slime experience today, uhm not fun.

Yeah 2 bites of egg when you first go to soft food may be all you can eat, especially if you still have a good bit of swelling in your tummy. But in a wk or two, it should get to where you can eat a little more. And the weird, bubbling, hungry, gnawing feeling in your tummy is usually acid. A PPI is really helpful for this and makes all the difference in the world. I was using prilosec, but got some Equate Zantac 150 because it was cheaper, and not time release. Someone mentioned yesterday that their dr mentioned the delayed or time release doesn't stay in our tummies long enough to work, so I was glad the stuff I had just bought didn't mention delayed release on it.

You can add the plain greek yogurt to add to Soups refried Beans or anything to up the Protein, its really good. I use it in place of sour cream in everything. I also use the greek yogurt to add the hidden valley ranch mix to dip chicken and other meats in. The Hidden Valley fiesta ranch is good too. I also put the greek yogurt in tuna or chicken salad. I don't use the protein drinks/mixes very often to get my protein any more, never have been a big fan of them. I liked vanilla ok with Peanut Butter in it a couple times.

My favorite thing right now are Sams Choice Stuffed Chicken breasts from Walmart, there are 3-4 flavors. I like the one with pepperjack, swiss, and bacon, and also the mushroom one. They are in the long freezers near the meat section. They only take 30 mins to bake, they are not dry like a lot of chicken, and they have anywhere from 34-37 grams of protein. 3-4 grams of carbs. I can't eat a whole one, so it makes 2 meals. Since finding these, i have met my protein goals daily and they are really good.

:)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
