HELP...glucose levels up???

Recommended Posts

So...I am not diabetic. I was tested SEVERAL times (strong family history of type II) I knew if I did not have the surgery...the door I was knocking on...the looming diabetes was gonna hit! So...now I lose all this weight...less than 50lbs to goal...and my sugar is HIGH!??? I ate a packet of sugar free oatmeal this morning for Breakfast, felt awful @ an hour later, checked my glucose level...168???? What is going on!? I will be FURIOUS if I did this and still end up diabetic!!! I mean I know its not just weight...but COME ON!!!! Anyone else have varying levels early out from surgery (its almost 3 months for me) I am a nurse and I just can't wrap my brain around this. What else can be causing these spikes???

I'm sorry that you're upset about your glucose levels, I understand, I've been a diabetic for over 15 years, and totaly understand frustration about them. First of all, my doctors have advised that I don't test my blood sugar until 2 hours after eating, no matter what meal. My next question would be, did you put any type of sweetner with your oatmeal? or what did you drink with your breakfast? Did you put any type of fruit on your oatmeal, if so, most of them have the natural sugars in them and will spike your blood sugars. These are only observations and questions, no offense meant. Congratulations on your weight loss!

No fruit...no drink....nothing else but some Water like 20 minutes after the oatmeal. Battery of woodwork tomorrow....never a dull moment.

This surgery isn't a cure for diabetes, but you know that. Oatmeal is a carb so if you have a carb sensitivity you may have to be careful. Something to talk to your dr about that's for sure. Sorry :(

Diabetes diets arent' really about Sugar content. IT's about total CARBS. A packet of plain instant oatmeal has 16 carbs in it. The sugar free Maple and Brown sugar variety has 18 carbs in it. So you can see just because it's sugar free doesn't mean jack.

I'd advise you to check your blood sugar fasting. If your fasting glucose is over 120 that indicates Diabetes. If it is over 100 but under 120 you may be looking at pre-diabetes that may resolve as you continue to lose weight and become more active.

I too was fighting my diabetes pre-surgery, but now it is in remission!! YAY

I agree with the others. First of all,you should wait 2 hours to check your levels after you eat. That will give you a "TRUE" reading. I could eat and check mine in 20 minutes and it be 204, but in 2 hours it would be 99. The 2 hours gives your body time to process the food. So wait 2 hours before checking for accurate reading!

Second, Apple is correct, I could eat a snicker bar and my sugar would not raise nearly as high as it would if I ate a baked potatoe or french fries!! Something about the sugar in carbs that made my levels go thru the roof!!!

Oatmeal is that type of carb too and bananas are SUPER bad for diabetics!

Watch your carb intake and check 2 hours after your meal. If you are higher than 129 after 2 hours for a few days worth of meals, call your dr.

Kelly ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
