Diagnosed with H. pylori after VSG

Recommended Posts

About two months after my VSG I fell into a deep depression (mainly due to over 6 months of stress at work, but the stress of surgery did not help). I am bipolar, had been very consistant with my meds. I ended up in an outpatient program to treat the depression. I started having vomiting episodes every once in a while. As my bipolar meds were being adjusted, it was just attributed to them. Then when the meds were stabilized, I continued to have the episodes. Then they became more frequent and then became several times a day. I first went back to my bariatric surgeon just to make sure it wasn't something with my vsg. They gave me an H. pylori test. It came back positive. This is the bacteria that causes ulcers. I also went for an upper gi to confirm there was no blockage. I was prescribed Helidac. The upper gi was negative for blockages or ulcers. It only showed some reflux, but I have been dealing with that even pre-vsg.

I continued to have the vomiting. Sometimes after the meds, sometimes after I ate. There has been no pattern. I went back to my surgeon a week later. He prescribed me something to help with the nausea (so he said). I continued to vomit.

I then went to my PCP. He said the anti-nausea med I was prescribed was actually an anti spasm med. He took me off of that and put me on Zofran which I have had before when I used to have nausea with migranes (migranes gone after being put on cpap). He stated he had to calm my stomach before trying a different route. I have felt much better as the vomiting has stopped the last 5 days.

I go back to my pcp on Tuesday for the next course of action and just wonder if any one else has suffered with this post-op. My biggest concern is that I haven't been able to keep my bipolar meds regular and the work I've done to get out of my depression the last 3 months will suffer.

I don't have any word of wisdom for you but I do want to empathize with you. Sounds like you have had a bit more than your share of troubles. I hope all gets straightened out soon.

HUGS,

Laura

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
