Calling all low BMI sleevers

Recommended Posts

I have to appeal to my insurance company because they only cover the sleeve for patients with a BMI over 50 (I'm 44). In my appeal letter, I want to mention other insurance companies that allow lower BMI patients to have the sleeve.

So, if your BMI was 35 to 49 and your insurance covered the sleeve (with or without co-morbitities), please respond with your pre-surgical BMI and the name if your insurance company.

Thanks so very much!

I have Kaiser, mine was 43 and I had 2 cormorbidities. However, I lost 55lbs pre-op and my BMI went down to 37, but they still did my surgery and here are their requirements:

To be referred for bariatric surgery, candidates must be

at least 18 years old and must have a:

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) >35 WITH SPECIAL

CIRCUMSTANCES

As recommended by the appropriate specialist to

the Regional Bariatric Medical Director or

designee and approved by the Director or designee

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) 40 - 49.9

With one comorbid condition from Category 1 -

OR -

Any two comorbid conditions from Category 2 -

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) 50 OR GREATER

No comorbid conditions required.

Hope this helps you!!

Kelly :)

I was at 41 when I first started in January, but my insurance (Cigna) requires a 6 month diet and excersise regimin before approving my surgery. Now I am at about 37, and was concered because my insurance requires to be at least a 40. My doc said not to worry because the insurance will take my BMI at the start of the program, not after the 6 months. I'm scheduled for late July to get my surgery done.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
