I am sooooo confused. I am normally a happy go-lucky girl with so much patience for everything and everyone..........Well, I will officially be 1 month post-op tomorrow and I have been experiencing severe mood swings for the last 2 weeks....

In the begining (after week one) i contributed the moods to lack of sleep from discomfort and no food but now that I am eating (pureed) I thought it would be over.

Anyone else experiencing this? I take a chewable Multivitamin everyday but I am wondering if I am missing some valuable Vitamins or minerals I am not getting.

Or easy answer would be that now I am a b***h...... My friends and family say they don't see these mood swings but they are just being nice. My husband tells me I went from sweet to b***h on wheels........

HELP ! Any suggestions would be appreciated. I put a call into the surgeon to see if they got my blood test results from last week showing my Vitamin levels.

Thanks all!

Dawn :)

Well, think for a sec. Lots of things are at play.

You aren't getting your "fix" anymore, whatever that meant in your case. Whether binging or sugar or just eating too much on a regular basis etc, you can't do it anymore. That means lots of things that had been comfortably food-numbed aren't anymore.

On top of that, many many hormones are fat soluble. As you lose, these get released into the blood stream. It is not unusual for a woman's cycle to be pretty screwed up for a year as this all gets flushed out. It can also affect mood, temprament, etc.

Stay well hydrated, keeping folloiwng your postop instructions, do what you can to think about how much you value your relationships (to help with the urge to be irritable) and know it will settle down eventually.

Girl, I was known as "Queen Bitch" for about eight weeks following my surgery. Your body is all confused right now. First off, anesthesia does a number on it. Prior to that, you were probably on some kind of crazy diet that made your body say "what the heck"? Then, you have surgery. Then you only give your body liquids and then slowly incorporate food back into your diet. You start adding exercise and losing weight. Your poor body is a mess, it doesn't know what is going on and has some major adjusting to do. But never fear, your hormones and everything else will level out soon enough and all you will be is happy, happy, HAPPY with the new and improving you!

As the others mentioned, anesthesia, trauma and the fact you're not indulging in food and getting the endorphin "high" all play a part. It works that way for the boys too, I have been super grumpy lately and pissed at the world.

WARNING! May be TMI: I had previously diagnosed with low testosterone and had my levels under control till I had surgery, then they shot right through the roof. I halved the dosage and was OK for a few more months and then had my levels rechecked and they were through the roof again. So the doc prescribed a half strength version for me - which I cut the dosage in half AGAIN, so now I am taking 1/8th of what I originally used to take. I have to wait a few weeks to get rechecked but I can feel they're too high yet. I have to take SOMETHING as my level bottoms out way below male normal between dosages, then I want to cry all the time. The reason is simple, there is less of ME to spread the hormones around in so they in effect get stronger. This can also happen wihtout taking replacement therapy as your own natural hormones will become more "concentrate" too. Now you're just starting out so this effect may not be kicking in yet.

I'm right there with you. I'm about a month post-op, and have had the same feelings. The therapist I'm working with said the same as those who posted above - I'm a binge eater, and I've taken away my outlet - so many emotions to deal with, not to mention the new lifestyle. I'm doing my best to find "healthy" ways to cope and am hopeful this is just part of the healing process! Good luck to you!

Hi,

Please trust you are not alone! As you can see from the other posts it is not uncommon! My husband had to point it out to me that I was very "testy" he said I was snippy and quick to jump on things... He pointed it out to me a couple of times and at my 2 week follow up visit I mentioned it to my doctor and he said it is all totally normal, that it is my hormones raging and adjusting to the surgery. He told me it "could" take as much as 3 months for my body to find a balance... thank goodness it did not take that long, but I am almost six months out and I do catch myself being very quick to get ticked off on something so stupid or meaningless.. totally out of character for me. It doesnt happen often but it does still happen once in a while with me.

Good luck...hopefully it will pass soon and your body adjusts.

I totally get this. In class yesterday, my instructor took me aside and asked me if everything was okay? She said I had seemed really angry the last few weeks. I was floored! I asked two of my classmates who are also my friends, if they had noticed this as well. They both agreed. Floored again. And hubby concurred with them when I asked him later. What a relief to read that this is normal after surgery. I am 8 weeks out and doing fine with the eating plan and exercise and all. I didn't even realize that I was looking/acting grumpy.

Looking forward to this clearing up!

Agreed with everyone it takes a while to adjust to dealing with the emotions we would have just buried with food previously, and hormones take time to balance out. Exercise helps our weightloss as well as relieving stress. I am starting out slow with walking and my Gazelle Glider, but seems to be helping. You're not alone in this!

I'm in the same boat. Everyone thinks I'm a total b**** now.... Me and my mother argue everyday about how bad my attitude has gotten. I'm almost 3 months post op and I don't know when my hormones will return to normal levels..... sigh lol.

THANK YOU all so much for your valuable advice.

I know you are right and I have to be patient for sure. I will mention to my doc when I see him but I am sure it will get better with time.

It was great to hear so many other people going through it.....No offense but at least I am not alone.

BIG wish to you all that this moodiness is quick lived.

SMILES!

Dawn :)

Happy to report that I am down 28 lbs since surgery June 1st. SO happy about the weight loss! Have to figure out how to update my ticker :)

I'll be three weeks out tomorrow and I am the same way. I am usually easy going, but I find I'm quick to being irritable. I don't let anyone know when I'm feeling this way, but I have a difficult time hiding it. Today the adult step children are coming over and they don't help with the cooking etc. They don't clean up after themselves or their children either and I'm going to have to work overtime to keep myself in check. I usually would accept this for what it is, but today I'm angry before anything even happens (cooking, cleaning, and no eating sucks). I do understand exactly how you feel and hope we both get through this stage of our journey without any "mishaps." I am not, however, moody with everyone. I suspect that the things we are moody about have always been there, but with so much to deal with right now those things are even more taxing. Good luck and I hope your blood work is good.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
