Good luck to you - I hope everything goes as planned.

I too am waiting anxiously for a refill which is dependent on the upper GI that I take next Monday.

I had my first partial unfill. Three weeks ago I had a minor stuck and minor PB...that night I had my first problem with reflux during the night (woke up and had to spew the acid out of my esophagus) the next day I had gradually worsening pain and tightness...it was the weekend so I called first thing Monday...the nurse told me to give it another day and I was fine (mistake made here...as I keep saying here NIGHTIME REFLUX = GET A SMALL UNFILL, yes I knew it and should have insisted, but by Monday I was fine). Fast forward 3 weeks of no problems at all and after eating the same oatmeal I have every day and having it go down just fine it's 30 min. later and I start having crushing chest pain so bad that it makes me nauseous and I vomit a little, which gets me tighter...again it's the weekend so they don't get me in until Tuesday by which time I can't eat. Doc takes out 2cc's of my 5.9cc's and I get sent for a UGI...the barium, even after the unfill won't budge...the thicker stuff finally goes through a tiny bit. No slip, nothing enlarged so now I've got 8 weeks before I can start filling again. I don't want to get back to the point where the reflux becomes a problem again and if I have any nightime problems I'll be in for an unfill that day.

What I've learned here is (yes, please call your Dr. to get clarification of your problems...I'm no Dr.) that many (not all) with reflux before the band are cured of the reflux after (and many with hernia repairs at banding). Reflux is the most common side effect of banding (so many of us with no reflux before now have it) and if it's very mild and is controlled by a PPI, then it's not an issue. If you have ANY breakthrough reflux during the day or ANY signs of reflux at night you need a small unfill (and some need to be checked for hernias as well). I also find that some don't know ALL the signs of reflux so here they are again:

- Burning- the usual suspect

- Globus sensation- some only get this with no burning which is a feeling of a lump in the throat

- Coughing at night- usually a dry cough (you can aspirate acid into your lungs

- Gurgling- Acid feels like it's bubbling up your esophagus

- Choking- the above makes some wake up feeling like they're choking

- Belching/Burping- up acid at night

- Nose- Sometimes people wake up with acid/liquids coming out the nose

- Need to spit or vomit at night- Usually bringing up acid or even food, for some this even happens when they're sleeping

Here's the bottom line...we got the Band to get our health back, not to trade one health issue for another...uncontrolled reflux can lead to way more serious problems than losing your Band so don't let it go on.

OK, off my soapbox, and I'll be back if there are any more reflux issues!

Well, so far so good. I had fill out for a number of weeks. Had about 3cc last time. Today had 1.8 put in and am on liquids today. No reflux yet. Have found a few of my problems were of my own fault. I can NOT eat at night before bed time. Need to be done eating about 2 hrs at least before bed. I take a about a half glass of Water before bed. It seems to rinse my esophegus. Helps me. I hope I can get more fill if a few weeks. In fact I have and appointment on the 20th. Will keep you posted.

I had tests to determine if all is okay with my stomach and band and it is ok. Thankfully.

I had reflux before my surgery three years ago. Being banded made it go away. However recently it has returned. Had to get completely unfilled, start Pepcid AC, wait a month and hope it goes away. Guess we'll see what happens.

I've had reflux in a row for more than two months, waking up with acid in my nose and/or lungs... now Im geting my band removed. three years ago I was promoting the band and telling everyone that it was the best decission in my life...now after five years I cant wait to get it out and I wouldn't recommend the band to anyone!!! we arent fat because we have big stomachs and are always hungry....but because we eat cause we are sad, lonely....you name it...

I'm wondering if they tried a partial/full unfill to relieve the reflux (mine went away immediately). I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with your Band and I'm glad for you that you've made the right decision for you.

One thing...I was fat because I had a stretched out stomach, ate huge portions, or was always starving on a diet. The Band solved that issue for me and allowed me to lose all the weight and keep it off...it was just the tool I needed.

Best wishes! -BG

Hi,

my band wasnt filled. They put 1cc in my 10cc band 6months after the surgery but immediatelly fodd got stuck and I had to be hospitalized...

yes sure band helps with stredched stomach, but Im hoping that my stomach will shrink if I dont eat too much, cause its a muscle...

Im having my surgery on Tuesday. Of course I have mixed feelings, Im afraid of eating after the band is removed, but I have to take again the responsibility for my health and eating...I hope I can do that :-)

Just thinking of you and hoping you're doing well recovering from the surgery. I'm sure the recovery will be a little easier this time without all the other worries about restriction/Band.

Feel better soon and best wishes! -BG

I'm not banded yet, but my Dr. is Dr Ortiz. He has several webnairs on his web site for the Obesity Control Center. One I just watched said that if there is this type of problem with reflux etc that you should get it taken care of or you can cause a stretched pouch, so the sooner the better. The web videos are worth a look, I believe they are also on youtube.

Banded more than a year and at the same time had diaphragmatic hernia repair (often related to reflux). I had bad reflux on and off for years and never had one incident of it even when eating bad foods since my band! Also losing weight takes pressure off that are and can reduce reflux.

Who ever said reflux is not to be taken lightly was RIGHT! Reflux irritates the cells of your lower esophagus and can nag them into malignant transformation...cancer!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
