Rough 'nothing tastes good' kinda day

Recommended Posts

This is a note to KellyW--

It took me a lot longer to be able to eat than most people--I think some of us stay swollen longer, and it just takes more time for the swelling to go down. I noticed today that I actually "chugged" 5 big swallows of Gatorade before I thought about it, and nothing bad happened. Two weeks ago, that would have come right back up immediately. I would also make sure you're on the right dose of PPI (because excess acid is horrible for keeping your tummy swollen up!). You might find relief with an additional med or a change in dose--and you don't have to wait to see your doc to try it. Hang in there; even my horrible "can't eat without getting sick" issues are gradually getting better. Sometimes it just takes longer than we want!! (and it doesn't help that it seems like everyone else is doing so great, and you feel like you can't even eat a couple of bites!!! I feel ya!!)

I was sleeved on the same day as you and I am having the same problems. I can only get about 2-3 bites in and then I

get the horrible chest pain. It also takes about 10 minutes to go away. I usually will get up and walk and pray that, that will fix the pain. I totally understand what you are going through sad.gif

I put a call into my doctor's office late today so I will let you know what he says. Hang in there, it has to get better for us rolleyes.gif

@ Maggie- I was sleeved on May 5th, but around 8 pm due to an emergency surgery pushing everyone back. So I consider May 6th my Anniversary Day.

Thanks so much Meg!

I don't have ANY problem with liquids and never have! I can drink Water three or four big gulps with no issues..I normally don't, but I have forgetting that I shouldn't!!. I don't feel sick with anything, just like a lump is in my throat or pain in my chest after a few bites. Not always, just sometimes.

That is what is so weird to me, that it comes and goes! I could not even take 3 bites of that cottage cheese today, but drank 5 oz of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup. Then 2 1/2 hours later had a Protein drink!

Tonight for dinner, I tried a salmon burger and while I only had about 4 small bites (and it was heaven), it felt fine! I probably could have eaten a little more, but I was afraid I would get that pain, so I stopped.

The salmon burger was alot more dense than that cottage cheese and it didn't give me any trouble!

Maybe just certain times of the day, I swell up or something? I don't know. I just wish it would be consistant. That way it wouldn't worry me that something is wrong.

I do take 40 mg of Nexium daily. The last couple days, I have been trying to eat something every couple of hours, thinking that maybe it would help. I will just keep pressing on and pray that it will get better soon! I guess as long as I can get stuff to go down and stay down, it can't be anything too bad!

Kelly ;)

I really enjoyed mashed potatoes and I mixed in cottage cheese and sprinkle salt and pepper on top.

Can you do omelettes with shredded cheese? refried Beans with shredded cheese (do you see a theme here I like cheese).

Is ground beef/turkey considered a mushie or a soft food? I truly can not remember what stage I had it in but I did up with mexican flavour, guacamole and little refried been.

Can you tolerate milk? You could do a glass of milk and throw in a scoop of milk powder to up the Protein.

I know I enjoyed licking a spoon of Peanut Butter it was amazing.

tuna with mayo AND dill pickle relish.

Eggfaces mini bites. I now make my own versions since I know the basic premise.

Once you are out of this stage it gets better. I know I became very bored with this stage as well.

Raine, what great suggestions!!! I'll remember these when I'm there. Thank you!!! (To be sleved 6/6)

Seems your mushie is a combo of softs and mushies.

This is what I had last night for dinner:

Mexican Night: Bare burritos: Ground beef mixed with taco sause, refried Beans, on the side in three little dollops, one of quac, one of salsa, and one of sour cream so you can just dip a little for added flavor. By the end of the meal, I didn't even use a 1/4 of each dollop.

Another is:

Since you can have chicken, mix chicken in with the ricotta bake.

Also, I tried this from the World According to EggFace: Her bites! Make them as you want they are great. I made ham, cheddar, onions and peppers. Cooked the onions and peppers realy well but was still good for Breakfast, I was able to eat 3 of them that I made in a normal sized muffin pan. That night for dinner hubby made chicken tenders cooked in marinara sauce and I had two more with a drizzle of sause and two tenders. You can do a mexican version of this and put a little sour cream and salsa on top. You can do an italian version of this too by using italian sausage out of the skin with onions and mozzeralla cheese and top with a little marinara sauce. You can also do this as a chinese version and call it egg foo young lol add chinese veg cooked well and a little ff brown gravey mixed with low sodium soy sause.

Another thing I liked doing is mashed potato and mix in carmalized vidalia onions and ground beef or cut up chicken tenders.

Hope some of this helps, when I got out of the mushie stage (mine was only basically mashed, refried Beans, and such, nothing with chuncks and had to be a paste consistancy or thinner) I tried soooooo many things.

Good luck!

Mushies has been the biggest surprise to me diet wise. I love crunch. I am not a sweets person but I might commit a crime to get my hands on movie style popcorn. So I thought mushies would kill me. Well, maybe it was being on full liquid for 3 weeks that made me so happy with mushies and hearing one comment in my support group: "you can eat anything with the sleeve now, or try anything, as long as you can make it mushy"

With that I was off to the races. I put the greek yogart down and picked up the Beef Pot Roast. That was dinner tonight, about 3 ounces of beef pot roast pureed with cooked carrots and a bit of gravy. In my mind, I think it will all end up together and mushy after it's eaten anyway. And so far my stomach is accepting everything. So while I do not like being so low capacity, nothing food wise has upset my stomach yet so I'm very happy from that perspective.

I'm so sorry to hear you are having such problems. I wonder if you went to the store and tried to find something you have never had before if it might help. Maybe if you tried something with no expectation, no prior knowledge of what it should taste like?

I know my stomach being able to take 3 ounces of beef has greatly helped me in the pursuit of Protein. I sure hope your desires will turn around when you get your crunch back. Since that's where my weakness resides I'd actually considered staying in mushy land.

Jut have to tell you my so works at a movie theater and before my sleeve he would bring a huge bag of buttered movie popcorn home almost every day. Oh but I miss it so! And have to watch my husband eat it...sigh!

Raine, what great suggestions!!! I'll remember these when I'm there. Thank you!!! (To be sleved 6/6)

Just know that her meals are more for the soft foods stage than the mushy stage as in this stage everything should be pureed. Refer to your doctor's instructions for what is allowed on their plan. Everyone is so different!

Thanks, but everything I eat has to be pureed at this stage. don't know how most of those things would be blended up liquified!!

I will keep them in mind for my next food stage tho!

Thanks!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
