Fruits & Vegetables......

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I am almost two months post op and so far everything is absolutely fantastic except i am always leaning toward everything Protein and by the time I eat like 2-3 oz of protein I am totally full and don't get more than a bite or two of veggies in, if that. I haven't even ventured near fruit and I miss them both terribly as I was an avid produce eater before surgery. Worst of all, I am now experiencing major Constipation or pooping bricks. Anyone else have this issue? I really miss my fruit and veggies and feel like a slave to protein........... :(

Btw, I also drink a Protein Shake once a day that has 45 grams of protein.

Others are probably going to disagree with me, but I would say eat your fruits and veggies! A balanced diet works best for me, than focusing on ONLY Protein, or protein first. Just see what works for you. I think you are getting plenty of protein just on the Protein Drink, and should be fine. I just switched up my diet recently, eating fruits, veggies, yogurt, granola, cheese, all organic, and ive been dropping the weight like crazy! I am still eating my turkey and chicken, but I eat the other stuff too. I hope it continues this way. Just play around with your foods and see what works best for your body and weight loss (and most importanly, health!!!).I also am taking in an average of 1400 calories, sometimes even 1800, and losing weight! I am sure most others eat half of that or less. Everyones bodies are so different, and not everyone does well with high protein, low carb. low calories. You just have to experiement. Good luck! And keep us posted!

As for the Constipation, try some Miralax until you can get more fresh fruits and veggies in :) And of course, make sure you are drinking enough fluids and exercising, at least walking, because that will keep things moving along.

Thanks Sarah - I really appreciate the input. I have taken Miralax for two days now and still nothing (it's been 6 or 7 days since last BM). How long does the Miralax take to work? One of my friend's doctors says to use Milk of Magnesia instead and so I am wondering if i should go buy some..........

Shannon, I agree with you that I really miss the fruits and veggies and have been trying to get more in this week. I said to hell with the carb count on the weekend and cut up an apple and put in the VitaMax with 5 prunes, a few ice cubes, a 1/2 cup of Water and made myself a wonderful fruit smoothie without any Protein at all. I too was feeling really constipated but things got to moving and I don't know if it was a coincidence or the drink! Last night I had about 1/2 cup of cantaloupe an hour or so after my dinner Protein. The Miralax label says it works in 3-5 days (I think) and that seems too long to wait to me.

I've read that your body can't absorb more that 20-25 gms of protein at one time so you may not be benefitting from the 45 grms in one drink. I don't know if that is accurate or not...it is just what I read online and I can also read on the Internet that Elvis is alive and living in my basement so take my info for what it is worth!

I also wonder what our daily total protein need is? I did some reading about this weekend and kept coming up with 45-50 grams for a 140 lb woman. I am getting much more than that most days and maybe it isn't necessary? All questions I know and not really an answer to your post! Maybe I'll start a new post and find out what folks think the appropriate amount of daily protein is. Bottom line...we evolved eating fruits, veggies and protein and it can't be good for us to just eat protein and not much else! :P

The Miralax does usually take a while, maybe 3-4 days. You can take it everyday. Eventually things have to work their way out :) Miralax is also a stool softner, so it will helps with the bricks :/

I have never taken Milk of Magnesia, so cant help you there, but I think others have.

I totally forgot about a juice I use to drink. I need to get some more. It is called PlumSmart. I get the light one. I forget how many calories, but it wasnt too bad ,maybe 50 calories for 8oz. I would drink 8oz a day and it did the trick. Something else to try :)

I've taken both miralax and milk of magnesia- and mlk of magnesia works extremely fast- I would say I had a BM within an hr and a half of taking it and it does the job very well. My mom is a nurse and so when I was taking the miralax and it wasn't working and i was feeling horrible, she made me go to the store and get the milk of magnesia- it was the best advice she gave me. I don't have that problem usually anymore but I know that when it comes back, I'm sticking with the milk of magnesia.

Thanks everyone. I tried the milk of magnesia and it worked. It was brutal but it worked. I am really going to try to incorporate a little more fruit and veggies into the mix and Sarah, I will for sure check out the Plum Smart. Thanks!!

Hi

I am now having every single morning a home made smoothie: 200 gr of strawberries and 100 ml of skimmed milk (and a couple of ice cubes to make it cooler): fibers, Proteins, liquids and a great tasting breakfast! Less than 100 kcal because strawberries have only 30 per 100 gr. Sice I'ver started having it every morning things down there are getting better, at least in a natural way without using medicines. If it can help...

I was really missing veggies too, but had little room for them. The good news is, as the tummy relaxes and heals, you can eat a little bit more... I use this space to eat veggies. I started by making veggie Soup, and eating it as a snack between meals to get in more veggies and liquid. That was really yummy! Now I make stir fries, and Pasta dishes using veggies as the pasta or added to my Dreamfields pasta. It only takes a few bites to fill me up, but the veggies are wonderful! I also make myself salads using tender butter lettuce and apple, with blue cheese, walnuts and fake chicken(you could use real) I found a pear dressing that is lower calorie. I can eat quite a bit of the lettuce, not so much of the apple, but that is a very nice meal with plenty of variety and veggies.

I haven't heard of Dreamfields Pasta? What is that...is it low carb by any chance? I tried the Mission whole wheat carb balance tortillas this week (small -fajita size) and they have changed my life! I made a mini-pizza on one (Eggface recipe) and grilled cheese sandwiches! Yummy and I love finding a lower carb bread I could eat.

:D Now if I can find a low carb Pasta my life will be perfect! :D

Yes, Dreamfields is low carb pasta. It's marketed for diabetics (that's how I found it). http://www.dreamfieldsfoods.com/

I ordered mine from netrition.com, but found that local markets like Safeway and Raleys both carried it in the regular pasta section. Its pretty much like regular pasta, but only a few usable carbs in a serving. .. I think 5 or 6 if I remember correctly. You can find a store search engine on their web site.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
