I had no nausea but I did have pain from the drain site as well as the horrible gas pains. It made it really hard to take a breath and I kept trying because I didn't want to end up with pnemonia! I have asthma so my likelihood is worse off if I did get it do I really concentrated on windmilling my arms, walking, using a heating pad, and getting hubby to pound on my back to get rid of the gas as soon as possible. The drain site pain lasted about a week I'd say.

I was really lucky. Minimal pain (more discomfort than anything) and no nausea. I did get great drugs in the hospital and I wasn't afraid to take pain Rx when I get home. The biggest thing I remember immediately following surgery was being weak and trying to make peace with food demons since I had not had a pre-op liquid diet. Best wishes! :)

I had almost NO gas pain, took pain stuff the first day, and the second day had nausea problems with the iv and a fever. The third day: NO anything. I've never opened the pain meds that came home with me. I wish you wonderful luck as I had. I'm a total wimp---just do everything they tell you to, and you will have very little nausea or pain.

I'm having surgery soon...like within the month and I'm trying to prepare myself for "Hell Week" and beyond. Please share your experiences with post op pain and nausea. Which was worse and how long did it last? I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to pain and an even BIGGER wimp dealing with nausea.

Thanks

I had major nausea in the recovery room and they waited to send me to my room until I was fine- even had me actually swallow two pills. Have not had nausea again.

My pain was fierce off and on and would seize up from gas to stomach and back in an almost rippling effect. I used my diiaudid pump and it worked immediately- even on my gas pain. By the time I came home I was way down on meds and thogh I still take them it is for other issues and it controls little wisps of stomach pain as well.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
