Has anyone had their VSG with Dr. Jose Rodriguez, Dr. Aramburo or Dr. Almanza? How do I pick a safe place to have my WLS in Mexico. ??

I am having my surgery done with Dr. Aceves. I just started googling about doctors in Mexico to see what I could find out. I read, read and read so more and I also called the doctors offices to find out as much as I could.

From what I understand, there's actually 2 Dr Almanza's, a Jr & Sr. The one that I had was Mario Alberto Almanza Reyes in the Jerusalem clinic.

When I first started looking into WLS and found this board I was reading about people going to Mexico to have surgery. I thought to myself that "those" people are crazy! I would never do something like that. Because I thought it was so crazy it intrigued me to keep looking into it. I soon found out that my insurance requirements changed and I would have to wait longer for the surgery along with paying more out of pocket than I had thought.

I read so many positive things about Dr. Aceves and that is why I choose him over any other surgeons in Mexico. I also talked to Nina, a patient coordinator, on the phone and I loved how she put me at ease and answered all of my questions.

I have read about some other good surgeons in Mx, and I know that some of them are cheaper that Dr. Aceves. This is the decision that I made for myself and I know there are many others out there who have had good outcomes and love their surgeons in Mx.

All you can do is look around, ask questions and do what is best for you.

Oh, Dr. Aceves is located in Mexicali.

I too had my surgery with Dr. Almanza and had a very good experience. I would be happy to answer any questions and I can also recommend a wonderful coordinator who will also answer your concerns and will be there every step of the way with you, she owns her own beautiful 5 bedroom home in Tijuana that she uses for your recovery, as well as having the surgery herself not to long ago. biggrin.gif

I had my surgery with dr. Rod. Great surgeon! I even went shopping on day 3 in Mexico and day 4 in San Diego. No regrets what so ever.

I'm in the same boat. I thought that you'd have to be crazy to go to Mexico for surgery. However, when I found out my insurance wasn't going to cover me, I started looking into it to save money. Everyone seems to rave about Dr Aceves in Mexicali (near San Diego). That many satisfied customers can't be wrong. I would have no problem going with him. I ended up choosing Dr Guillermo Alvarez in Piedras Negras (near San Antonio). His reviews are also overwhelmingly positive. He seems to have a bigger following over on ObesityHelp. The travel costs for me were the deciding factor since I live in TX. These 2 docs have more experience and more satisfed patients than most US docs. There are other docs worth looking at but these came out on top in my research. I will have my VSG on July 1st. Good luck!

I was sleeved by Dr. Aceves 4 weeks ago. I am similar to many others on the board. Initially, not interested in Mexico but after reading hours of information it kept leading me back to Dr. Aceves as the right choice for a cash paying person. Money is always an issue to everyone and everyone is different. Dr. Aceves does your surgery in the most sterile private "full service" hospital. His reputation is at the top of the list of great surgeons who do this particular surgery. He and his assistant surgeon Dr. Campos (who also had the surgery) check on you 3 times a day until you leave, and you leave with xrays and a detailed breakdown of the procedure he did including the brand of staples he uses in your stomach! They simply know what they are doing and what your needs are pre and post op. You recover in a hospital for 3 nights and not in a "recovery house". You CAN find cheaper, but you really do get what you pay for. I was willng to pay $8750 to ensure I was not in a "surgical center" or a "recovery house" or an "outpatient" patient. Hope this helps.... I have no regrets - AND let me say that had I had the same surgery and hospital support in the USA, the cost would have exceeded 25k. I am SURE of that.

Dr Aceves is wonderful I wouldn't go to ANYONE in the world over him! I'd tell you to do your homework. Look at the people on this board and other boards who have had complications and see who their surgeon was. Even PM them as it seems ppl have issues with calling out Docs who have screwed up.

For that kind of money I would of stayed in the States and had the surgery right here for $10,000. So why go to Mexico? Dr. Almanza was very, very, experienced having preformed over a 1000 of these surgieries and the recovery house as well as Jerusalem hospital were very clean. I too was up and out shopping in Tijuanna the day after my surgery instead of laying in a hospital bed, and I would do it again. Everyone here is here for support and reseach. Speaking from personel experience I felt completely save going to Mexico, having my surgery there, and I was very happy with my recovery house. Good Luck with your decission. :cheer2:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
