Mexico - Gastric Vertical Plication Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am new to this and have a lot of questions. Has anyone heard of Dr. Ortiz @ Obesity Control Center in Tijuana, Mexico?? He has been on The Doctors and several tv spots. I want to have the GS Plication but very nervous about going to Mexico to have the surgery. My insurance will not pay for any weight loss surgeries so this is my only choice. $7500 vs 17,500 for lap band. My husband is unsure of the Plication as it is so new. Dr.Joya in Puerto Vallarta was recommened by several friends but when I saw he had a $500 Complication Fee to donate to if you wish, I decided better not.

Please let me know if you have stories from Mexico.

I would check out Dr. Corvala in TJ Mex. Dr. Cottam in SLC Utah told me that Corvala is the only Mexican Doctor I should consider. He is very experienced and doesn't use the "car salemen-ish tactics" that I felt the OCC uses. Also, check out Dr. Cottam. He uses the endo-flip. I think his price is 12K.

I got back today from my plication with Dr. Corvala, and I would recommend him as well. The hospital was spotless, I've never seen such a clean hospital. However it was really hard that 80% of the staff spoke no English and my broken Spanish wasn't great either, haha. Another thing that also was hard was the pain management was severely lacking. I have fibromyalgia, so the pain was a double whammy...if I hadn't of brought Percocet and melted it down I'd have gone nuts. I heard a lady groaning loudly in pain outside my room and it turned out it was a Canadian who had the gastric sleeve (not plication). Her sister talked to my mom and she said they weren't managing her pain either. I would also recommend to take a support person along, I don't know what I would have done without my mother there. All in all, I'm glad it's over with, glad I had it done, but boy I'm glad to be home!

I also had my surgery by Dr. Corvala back in July of last year. As far as pain management. I had the opposite problem. Theykept giving me morphine and I didn't need it. I had to insist they not give me any more. I agree knowing a little Spanish would have been helpful but I did manage to get my point across somehow. The hospital was spotless and quite wonderful. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
