I have not yet been approved for surgery, but I am curious how long I can plan to be out of work? I am just trying to plan for the best!

I went back to work at 13 days post op. I have a desk job with no lifting. I could have gone back sooner but I went out of town for 5 days to Celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday.

I plan to go back 14 days after surgery. Honestly though, I could have easily gone back to work today and today is POD 7. I have a desk job and do nothing strenuous so I wouldn't feel that way if my work was more physical. I actually did more WORK at home today with various projects than I would have if I had gone back to "work"! ;)

My doctor recommended 2-4 weeks off work depending how I felt. I had my gall bladder removed at the same time and stayed quite sore for the first 4 weeks but I did go back to work a couple days a week after 2 weeks. My job allows me to sit most of the time so it wasn't too bad.

Most likely the more physical the job, the more time off you will need. Still your doctor will be able to tell you for sure.

I haven't had my surgery yet but the Program Director said I won't be going back for 4 weeks. I work in a factory with occasional heavy lifting.

I think it depends on your job. I spoke at length with one of the ladies on here who's a nurse and she said she went back the day after she got home, but did mostly desk work initially. (She spent 2 nights in a hotel after being released from the hospital 2 days after surgery and then flew home)

I do lots of walking and standing and went back at 3 weeks. I was really, really tired by the end of the day, but it was doable.

My plan is 5 days... surgery is on the Wed and I plan to be back on the Monday. I have a desk job though... no lifting anything heavier than a stapler :)

Since I do medical billing and don't lift at all, I got my surgery on april 5th and returned to work on the 9th. My doctor told me to take at least a week off but I was bored at home doing nothing.

I had my surgery on December 20, 2010 and I was out doing last minute Christmas shopping on December 24, 2010. I did not go back to work until January 5 due to the holidays and my job being closed however I could have went back after a week. A week out I was still a little tired at points, but I do not do any lifting and I do not have to walk alot.

It depends on your job and your doc. I'm not released to lift more than 15 pounds for 6 weeks and of course lifting is a large part of my job. Physically, I felt fine after the first week.

I work in physical rehabilitation and my doctor said i can go back to work after 10 days but she said no lifting more than 10lbs...lol, gonna be hard doing that but I'll just have to trade some of my patients with others and not do any lifting for a few weeks. With that being said, I took off 3 weeks, but have more leave saved up if i need to take longer. I love love love love my job and my co-workers and I hope i'm not away from them for more than 3 weeks. much luck!

Mine is scheduled for the 27th and I will go back to work on the 9th. So 12 days, sounds like I should be ok by then. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
