Oh MY! lol

My kid calls me an old bag too, but he did tell me I was starting to look more like a Gucci bag instead of something of the rack at Walmart. ;-)

Girl I have been home a couple weeks now and already had many similar statements. At first it was bothering me, not because of what people think, but because I did not prepare myself for the attention. They know I did something to better myself and like always, a lot of people I know are "partypoopers". They are the ones that always talk but never act aqnd once again, Gina is doing something she said she would. I am not a hip hopper but am now using the term "HATER" more than ever. Don't even waste your time replying to the drama. I now smile and say if I get too small or never lose another pound, it is my biz and nobody else's.

I'm going through the same thing at work, their just haters!!!!!! They say I'm too skinny now and I'm gonna look sickly if I lose anymore weight, umm hello I'm around 181 are you serious??? Now my family on the other hand they all say I look good and cheer me on. I just ignore all the "haters" and keep on trucking with the weight loss, actually they fuel my desire to lose more weight just so I can prove them wrong, hee hee

I've found that some people have really genuinely been supportive of my journey... and I've been surprised by who they are. I've also found that some people really are 'haters', doing everything from telling me it doesn't look like I've lost any weight, to competing with how much weight is lost because they don't want to be the fat friend. Again, I've been surprised by which people in my life these people have turned out to me. Whenever someone tells me I don't want to get too thin or I shouldn't lose more weight, I just tell them that I am going to follow the advise of my doctor who has been doing this for more than 20 years... and if I'm feeling bitchy, I'll usually ask them how long they've been practicing medicine for. Remember, you are doing this so you can be the person YOU want to be, not the person your friends want to be!

I feel like I am going to be in for a rollercoaster. I am leaving the only town and friends I've ever known to go to another college in the fall and none of them will be there to comment. Is it worse when the people you know won't be able to see it at all except through Facebook? You ladies are really good at keeping me positive. Good post!

I hate that so many people like to spread negativity as if it was a disease and if they, the carrier, didn't spread it, it would overwhelm them! People become threatened by others when they become a little less predictable. Since they do not know you at a smaller weight, this threatens them. I hate also, hearing the whole "why cant you just exercise" comment. Uhm, Obviously I can (since i've lost 50+ lbs in the past doing so, but it comes back!) But, I need a tool to help me maintain and lose weight for GOOD. Many people were less than supportive when I originally told them about the surgery. Some of them have come around- complimenting, encouraging- and some have even considered getting the surgery! However, there are still those people that just love to try and put some negativity into my life. Hold your heads high, sleevers! If we allow people to affect our happiness, then everything we went through in working for it is kind of a waste!

I live with my mom, but all of my family and my friends are all over 100 miles away and they are my main source of encouragement, so I understand, and facebook is wonderful for keeping you connected. It makes it all the better for when I get to see them and they are hit with the difference it helps me see it too.

This was my exact experience. We are stationed 800 miles from all of our family. My family is in Texas, my husband's family is in West Virginia, and they were in "shock" as they watched me via Facebook drop pounds. At one point several of my long term friends started questioning the whys, hows, whats, on my changing appearance. Even some friends thought I was drinking or using illicit drugs as they all knew that I was quite the partier a couple of years before meeting my husband. I "had" to come clean via FB about what I had done in regards to my decision to revise from the band to VSG. They already knew I had the band, but they were not aware that I had revised, and since I was dropping weight so rapidly, the questions and messages, phone calls/texts started rolling in.

They were genuinely concerned. When we traveled to WV just 5.5 months after my revision, I was down about 100lbs, and my MIL decided to tell my husband that I looked way too skinny. Mind you, I'm only 5'2", and still weighed 165-170lbs. Least to say, when I dropped down to 125lbs, the comments really became harsh. I heard "you look like an Ethiopian child, you look like a cancer patient, your bones are showing" and for people that had never seen below 200-270lbs for over 20 years, it was a big shock. The last time I weighed 125lbs, I was around 12yrs old and in the 7th grade so of course my younger brothers don't remember a "small" sister.

I broke down and told my brother to look up pics of 115lbs-130lbs celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Miranda Lambert, Dana Kirkpatrick, and remember those chicks are 3-7 inches taller than I am, and that he could see bones on all those women. That really helped put my "size" into perspective for him.

I wanted everyone to Celebrate my success, and be elated with my results. Unfortunately, worry and concern really took over and they couldn't see that I was still healthy, and thriving. One thing that did help was when I traveled back to Texas in March 2009(almost 10 months post revision), my family could watch me eat, and see that I was eating a well-balanced, and nutrient diet every day. They saw me eat enchiladas, fajitas, steak, chicken, all veggies, and it really helped ease their fears. The whole "eating like a bird" is the perception they had, and it's just not realistic long term, and they needed to witness it firsthand.

Just be prepared, and acknowledge their concern, but do not allow anyone's comments to steal your joy in all of your successes. It's easy for me to say that now, but back then, it was very difficult for me to convince my loved ones that I was still healthy. One thing I did remind them of is that I was under close monitoring by not 1, but 3 medical professionals. My surgeons, my PCM and a nutritionist therefore they are not going to allow me to wither away or die because I "caught" skinny.

I'm already assuming I'll look horrible (at least for a while). I am going to look like a deflated balloon. And you know what? I'm perfectly okay with that.

I'm not doing this to LOOK better. I'm doing this to FEEL better and to be able to DO more.

and if I do end up looking great, well that's a bonus. :)

I didn't look horrible, I just looked better and better from a pretty low start point! I don't understand this comment at all?!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
