how long were you off work?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon said a minimum of 14 days and normal is a month. I have short term disability after 21 days and honestly I could save enough in addition to the time I will have in vacation - and I am seriously thinking about it. I am so stressed with work and so ready for a break!

Did anyone else do that?

I went back to work on day 13 but could have gone back sooner except I went out of town for my dad's birthday celebration.

I stayed out for 6 weeks total. I have a high lifting job so my doctor recommended 4 weeks but I had the time and I wanted to make sure that I was 100% when I went back so I took an additional 2 weeks. I say if you got the time take it.. When you go back the same place will be there. Focus on getting better and becoming healed.

One week ... and I flew 4 hours to present at a week long conference. Then I took the second week off to stay at home. Too much too soon for me, standing up and talking all day. Did not get hydrate enough, not enough protien so I was wiped week 2. If you can take off the time to learn new habits without financial worries or job worries...do it.

Good luck!

I was back to work on post op day 6. I had no problems except having to nap after work for a couple days. I have a "desk" job so it wasn't that difficult, I guess it depends on the type of job you perform.

I agree...take the time if you can afford to. I am fortunate in that I do not have a job other than my family. I am a student and took the semester off and starting back up in the summer. I am 4 weeks post-op today and am feeling great!

Just do what feels good to YOU. :)

I was off for five weeks. My job is not physically strenuous, but can be intensely competitive and stressful, and I couldn't afford to be walking around all spacey or nauseated or off my game in any way. The usual here is four weeks, but my doctor wanted me to take an additional week. I'm very glad I took such a long break, it was really good for me. I also took five weeks after my hysterectomy, and if I'm honest, six would have been better.

Listen to your gut about what you can really do and take the time you need if you can.

took just short of three weeks, should have taken 4. I am a construction engineer and I was wiped out the whole first week back. Felt much better the next week.

My doctor wanted me off 1 month. I took it figure I had the vacation and I needed it! I am in week two and still a little weak.

there is no way I could be at work today.

I had surgery on Wed and got out of the hospital on Saturday. I stayed home that week and back to work on that following Monday so...10 Days.

It amazes me how it varies so much from person to person. For me it was one month, and I felt like myself again.

Those first few weeks it was all I could do to concentrate on getting my fluids and Protein in - it felt like an all day job from the moment you wake until bedtime - sip, sip walk, walk, sip sip... I don't think I could have focused on that and work (and I was soooo tired).

That was just my experience though.

I had my surgery on Monday, Feb. 28 and was back to work the following Monday with no issue. I think a lot depends on your beginning weight. I only started out at 215 so within one week post of I was down to 202... Not a problem for me and I had plenty of Protein with my shakes so I didn't feel weak or need naps after day 5.

It's a personal choice... Have you ever had surgery before? If so, how did that go. I found this to be very similar to my Gall Bladder and Apendix surgeries as far as recover.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
