How soon were you allowed to go home after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm really worried about this, as I have a two year old at home. I'm hoping they'll let me go home the next day, but don't know if this is realistic or not. Please let me know when your doctors sent you home. Thanks!

I was sent home the next day. As soon as the leek test came back with no leaks. It is totally each surgeon's discression.

Every dr and insurance requirements may differ. I had my surgery at 7 am on a Wednesday and was home by 10:30 the next morning. My husband had his surgery around noon this past wednesday and we left the hospital by 2 pm on thursday. Most of the time it is a 23 hour stay unless there are complications. The 23 hours usually start when you get to a room. Good Luck.

I stayed 3 days. We live 3 hours from the hospital so they kept me an extra day. I was ready to go on day 2.

I checked in at 5:45 am on tuesday morning and was discharged Thursday at 1pm....when i had my appt with my surgeon preop, he said one day then he said wait..how many kids do you have...I replied..4....he said..hmmm 2 days...hahha...i think he just wanted me to get a head start with resting...i think one day is standard.

Dr. Aceves requires a 3 day stay. I didn't mind at all. I have a 3 year old and I don't think I could have handled her pouncing on my tummy a couple days after surgery. I was still guarded after 5 or 6 days but those first few, I was really sore.

I was three nights. They wouldn't let me go until I was able to keep fluids down. 2 nights is the norm at the hospital I was at.

My doctor had me scheduled to stay 2 nights but I asked to leave the next day, as long and I passed the leak test and could pass urine after the catheter was removed. I couldn't stand being away from my kids and my husband feeling like he was in a tug of war between home and the hospital. Talk to your doctor AHEAD of time so they can plan your tests and have your scripts ready to go home with.

Good Luck

I went home the same day! I requested too! I had a 9 month old at home and was feeling great! So he let me come home.

Not having surgery until the 12th but my doc said overnight is the most typical post op outcome for his patients. I am planning (hoping) to go home the next day since I am private pay!

WENT HOME THE SAME DAY. Yep, I had surgery at 10AM and was home by 5PM. But no way I could have handled a toddler, no matter how cute and adorable or well behaved. I had no drain, no leak test, no morphine drip and felt no pain. But I was nauseous first 24 hours. Only took my prescribed pain meds once and that was to sleep longer at night since my days and nights got mixed up.

All surgeons are different, especially those outside US. Best to ask you doctor what he/she normally does. Make sure you plan lots of rest and get help in taking care of family as you heal. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
