Do you count net carbs or all carbs?

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to know if you count all the carbs you eat or just net carbs? I was counting every carb and then I got some of the Carb Master yogurt that listed net carbs so it got me wondering which everyone else counts. Thanks!

I haven't been counting carbs at all. In my post-op seminar, they didn't even mention carbs. Just sugars, Proteins, and fats. What am I missing? Can you fill me in? This may explain why I am in a weight-loss holding pattern!

Every doctor has different post-op guidelines. If you keep your carbs under 100 grams per day, your body must burn your fat for energy rather than the carbs you eat. Many sleevers keep under 30 a day and have been VERY successful with weightloss. I was eating about 60 under my nurtrionist's guidelines. I recently dropped the carbs a little to see if it would help me get under 200. I have been in a little stall lately. It worked great the first week I did it. Then I went a week with no weight loss. I am trying to drink more Water. That is suppossed to help.

A carb is a carb. For me it was/is a patience thing, plus I'm not sure I can fully trust manufacturers on Fiber counts that would negate the carb intake(Mac on OH posted this back when I was in my losing stage, and it made sense then and now). I think it boils down to Protein to carb ratio. My protein to carb ratio had to be a minimum of 4:1 meaning if the protein count didn't have at least 4 times the amount of carbs, it never went past my lips. I was especially cautious with carbs in protein bars/drinks. I'd see some Protein Bars had 15gr of protein, but had 25-40grams of carbs. Those carbs, plus the usual sugar alcohols in protein bars were my carb allowance for an entire day. I'd rather grab some beef Jerky or cheese over those kind of bars.

I too don't count, I just make it a habit of prefering Protein over carbs, I'll eat a chicken breast and toss the bun, etc. Lost 101 pounds in 4 months so I must be doing it right.

My nutritionist said he didn't trust the "net" carb figures so if that is all he has, he doubles it and assumes that is closer to correct. He suggest going with the carb count and not net carbs if you have it. I won't be sleeved until 2 weeks from today (yea!!) but pre-op I am on a 30 gm carb diet and won't be increasing that much post-op.

I count net carbs primarily because fruits and veggies have carbs -- and we want to get those healthy fibers into our bodies -- I don't eat many processed carbs at all in fact, so most of my carbs are coming from fruits and veggies. For example, one of my granny smith apples will have 23 carbs in it alone -- if I didn't account for the fiber in the apple, I'd use up all my carbs with just one apple -- not realistic or healthy in my opinion. And truly, we really don't know exactly how many calories or carbs are in any one thing (it's all a guesstimate) -- so whether we use net carbs or full carbs doesn't, I don't think, matter in the end -- we just need to be conscious of the carbs we are eating and how they are affecting us . . . my 2 cents for what it's worth.

If you're at a stall or gaining monitoring carbs is necessary but if you're losing just keep doing what you're doing....

I focus on Protein, Water and exercise but I drink quite a bit of skim milk in my coffee 12 grams of carbs per cup and also have some other carbs throughout the week.

Mostly though my meals are chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, or some other Proteins

How do you calculate net carbs?

I am planning on emulating your low carb ways and so this is good to know as 40 carbs wouldn't seem to allow a lot of fruits and vegetables...

I use fatsecret.com -- it has a good food directory and you can make the options calculate for net carbs -- but like I said, it's all kinda iffy -- I think if you're in the ballpark, you're good.

I usually do Net Carbs...from all my days either on Atkins, South Beach, The Belly Fat Cure, I think I even remember something about this from WW...

You basically subtract the Sugar alcohols and Fiber from the total Carbs.

A label from an Atkins Protein bar:

Total Carb: 29g

Fiber: 11g

Sugar Alcohols: 15g

Net carbs: 3g

Protein: 15g (pretty good for the carbs)

I agree with others, you just have to find what your body responds too. I try not too do many bars, but when I'm on the road and don't have access to cold foods, its a good sub. Plus, when I get to eat fruits again...I want to make sure I am not feeling guilty about using all my carbs on one piece. I dont' think anyone got fat eating too many fruits and vegetables.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
