I agree with all the previous posters, and I'm going to throw it out there that the BMI is not the end all be all to great health. There is zero account for true weight in that thing, and stressing over it for me was nonsense. My initial goal kept me in the overweight category, and I was content at that weight. I still had curves, and not to mention I still had boobs. Another 30lbs lost, and I looked so tiny and felt uncomfortable in my own skin. That damn BMI chart is so judgmental and condemning.

I had a good talk with myself, and realized that body fat percentage, resting heart rate, my overall health, labs, and how I felt was all more important that than damn 24.9 on that chart.

The big thing to remember is that the BMI chart does not take into account bone density, excess skin, or fat %. It's just an equation, and there's far too many factors to base your health on that number.

I think you're in a good place, and maintenance you might find different challenges. Letting go is sometimes more difficult than staying the course. But, it's very liberating to recognize your success, and embrace your future without beating yourself over the BMI chart.

Go run about the park, relish every single moment, and realize just how you've come, and how much further you can go ! ! !

Once again thanks for the feedback!

Just came back from seeing my surgeon and he's really happy with my "progress" I still find it difficult to call it progress because I only lost a couple of pounds in so many months, he says he's happy with what I achieved up to now and my goal (yep, only 9lbs to goal now)is a very realistic one. When I said that I will still not have a "normal" BMI he said it didn't matter, he doesn't have a "normal" one either (and he is VERY fit and goodlooking). SO I am happy and less stressed

Great!!!! I'm glad to hear your Appt went good. Hugs!!!

Cheers to the new you. :)

How much did you adjust it by? You are now 9 pounds away, how much was it before?

BMI is very bad for athletic people. Let's take the extreme, Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is about 6'2" tall and weighs 250 pounds - guess what, at his prime Arnold Schwarzenegger was OBESE with a BMI of 32.1 \ö/

This may not be the body type you are aiming for, but it shows that more athletic people who have built up muscle mass are off much worse than slim people without muscles.

On a different note, say you adjusted your goal by 10 pounds or so. What relevance did 10 pounds have for you before surgery. Did losing 10 pounds really make a dent? For me, starting at 260 pounds, it didn't make much of a difference. Yeah, I'd hated to gain 10 pounds and would have been happy to lose 10 -- but overall, I don't think anyone would have been able to really see either much.

And last but not least, I think once you have made peace with the new weight goal, your mind set may actually power through it. I remember in school, I always waited until the last minute and tried to furiously cram knowledge into my head, I was able to remember it for the exam but forgot all about it soon after. Most things I remember well are the things I just learned by doing, when I didn't have the pressure behind it, when I didn't feel so cornered know it's do or die. So for now, just relax. I would even go further - set your goal weight to what you are at now. Consider your travel done. Now you are there. If this was vacation, then this would be where you enjoy yourself, enjoy the place you are at, try new things -- play around with the new you. Join the roller derby team, find a running group, start playing soccer -- test your new you and be amazed at what you can do with yourself.

....I think Arnold is around 5'9"(really!)..... He just makes you think his is 6'2".... so much of it is in the attitude!

Forget about everything else........girl you look soooooooo good, really pretty and very slender! I don't care what those BMI guidelines say because you've got it going on just the way that you are right now. Be very proud of yourself!!! I can,t wait to get down to your size :-) Keep us posted on how things turn out with your plastics too. .

What do you base that on? I got those values from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia...._Schwarzenegger

I would assume since he competed professionally with his physique, his height and weight should not be a secret.

Here is some more:

http://www.celebheig...negger-177.html

I'm from Sacramento, and around here thats what people say his height is..(actually 5'10") The scoop here is he wears lifts in his shoes (but is still no where 6'2'. Could just be a Governator rumor, but thats what I hear here... Here is a board that discusses it...

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-328222.html

According to this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/campaigns/wh2000/stories/tall080399.htm), the governator is only 5-10.

Which shocked the heck out of me, as I'd never heard it before. I'd always assumed the standard schlock was true; that is, he's 6 foot 1(inches)+ a little bit more for good measure.

I always thought it'd be pretty pointless for him to lie, since most of his competitors from his bodybuilding days would surely know the truth anyway. I mean he looked real tall next to the other competitors anyhow (yeah I know most pro-bodybuilders are short-asses, but still).

And I've seen a docu which showed one of his tailors (some Italian dude who does suits for "Stalloni"), and he showed a pair of Arnie's trousers. His legs appeared to be very long, which indicates to me that he's 6 foot over - however I'm crap at judging distances so maybe it was an illusion. On top of which, let's face it, the guys built like a small horse. Maybe it distorts the exact picture of how long his legs are. Many pro-builders seem taller than they really are - just cause they're so huge.

Then I found this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Schwarzenegger) which only adds fuel to the speculation.

While Arnold Schwarzenegger's height was always believed to be 6 feet, 2 inches (1.88 m), a July 2002 article in US Weekly magazine speculated that Schwarzenegger was actually closer to 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m). During his campaign for governorship it was noted that Schwarzenegger was considerably shorter than many expected, with others putting his height at around 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m), exactly as reported in US Weekly. His spokespeople now give his height as 6 ft even (1.83 m). In photographs of Schwarzenegger standing next to George W. Bush in Ohio in October 2004, the Governor is one inch shorter than the 5 ft 11 in President.

So, what's the truth here?

Yeah, I saw that controversial too, but like I said, he has been weighed and probed and had probably every part of his body measured - arms, legs, chest and I am sure they did the height too. He has been standing in nothing but Speedos and bare feet in a line of other dudes in Speedos. I think if he was lying, it would have been very easy to conclusively call him out and prove him wrong, just by knowing the height of everyone right and left of him. The fact that there is not more bruhaha of calling him a liar, I am pretty sure it's right.

I could also see that the constant abuse of his body probably does a number on his spine, so I don't doubt that he is probably not 6'2" anymore - after all, he is 63 years old, so he is probably shrinking.

On the other hand, if he was smaller, it would even more prove my point because his BMI would be even higher :-)

I think you look fantastic!!

And I hate the BMI chart, its a load of crapola as far as I'm concerned. We can't just pick some numbers and shove a bunch of people into it and then deem them obese or normal. Drives me batty.

I'm still really new to the sleeve so I don't have much experience, but stay off the scale. Forget the numbers. Go by how you feel. Or take your measurements or pull out a pair of old jeans and remember how far you have come.

The scale can be such a pain. And as we get older and have kids our bodies change. Thats why I don't have a set in stone goal. Even my "goal" weight that I think I will look good at will likely change as I have had 4 kids since I last weighed in at 150. My only real goal was to get under 200 lbs which I did, sure I am excited to lose more but the end number is just a number, its more the feeling of being comfortable in my own skin is what I am going for.

Anyways, hopefully I made some sense, oxycodone just kicked in and I'm a little out of it now lol.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
