Coffee coffee coffee

Recommended Posts

I think I drink more coffee post-op than I did pre-op. I drink it with sugar free Creamer or use milk and sugar free Syrup to keep the carbs down, but I have 3-4 cups nearly every day. I do full caffeine in the morning at work (because that's what is available), but I like Decaf just as much.

Lots of sleevers experience lactose intolerance post op. I sure did, and let me tell you I had a really bad episode so that I never drink regular milk or ever eat ice cream. Never! I don't think I've had any ice cream now in 6 months.

It's a good thing!

Lactaid works really well though, I've been using that in lieu of milk since and never had any issues with it. Good luck!!!

It doesn't cause ulcers, but it can worsen GERD (heartburn).

You are right. I should have said that it can increase the production of acid, and the stomach acid can contribute to inflammation and ulcers.

It is very simplified to say "caffeine causes ulcers." Again that is what many NUTs will tell you, but in my research there is no clear definition of linking ulcers to caffeine usage. With that being said I clearly don't NEED caffeine in my life, but do like coffee. If pushed I could give up coffee too. Everyone is different and every NUT/surgeon has different rules, so I just tend to follow the advice of my personal NUT and surgeon.

Well I'm totally totally proud of myself as well. . . (this isn't a coffee experience though) the other day i saw a sonic commercial and it hit me. . . I haven't had a hamburger or fries in over 13 months!!!!!! NOT ONE BITE! i know it's stupid, but i'm sooooo proud of myself. . . in my before surgery days I could easily polish off a supersonic burger plus extra large fries and a large drink. . . now that thought nauseates me. . . . all i could say when i realized that was WOW HOW GREAT IS THAT!!

Wow that IS really great!! Good for you!!!

I have had a burger since but it's always home made and used lean ground turkey... so I guess it's not so bad either. LOL!! Especially since I can't even finish a half one - I usually end up taking all the bun off and just chewing the meat.

I did not give up coffee. I did switch to Decaf 3 days before and immediately after the surgery. But I really like the flavored, so I buy the sugar free decaf instant coffee. I was sleeved 3 weeks ago, and about a week ago I started having one caffeinated coffee each morning. No troubles. But check with your doc and nut. My nut said to give it up for 6 months - but considering I would have 4-5 a day, I figure one a day can't hurt. (hopefully). Good luck!!!

I drink a lot of coffee with creamer and a tsp of sugar. It is so great. I don't make it super strong and I never ever do Starbucks. I keep it simple. I sometimes switch to agave. I never heard no coffee, no caffeine coffee. I try not to go crazy with it. But I have a lil every day, sometimes more. I think OLD coffee gives reflux the worst. I always drink it fresh, and pretty much ALWAYS at home. Restaurants generally do not know how to make good coffee, right?

Sorry I can not in good conscience advise anyone to go against their surgeons guidelines. My suggestion would be to talk to your Doc one on one and hash it out. Sometimes the Doc will give some personalized advice that way.

Good luck!!!

Coffee's great when you gotta go! I had a salad with a bunch of Beans last night, and I think I'm gonna venture out to get a latte in a bit. Watch out, porcelain god! Hehe.

I rely on coffee like a crutch, for energy to sooth me, to wind me down after a long day. I used to drink so much soda and beer before surgery so now I turn to coffee as the tiny bubbles in those two drinks are a definite no-no...

At first I made sure I was getting in my Water at least 64 ozs then I added Decaf, once I was able to get in 100 ozs of Water I added the caffeine back.

Here's the thing caffeine actually leaches water from your body and can dehydrate you if you're not drinking enough water so for every ounce of caffeinated coffee you should drink an extra ounce of water.

Also beware of the calories the drink can add... I was going along fine and never really used sugar or sweetners then one day I had a caramel coffee at DD it was love at first sip and also is what I believe started a carb induced plateau because the sugar got in my head and I couldn't have enough.

I've started doing more decaf the caff and i've laid off the sugar and now I believe it's fine.

Coffee and chewing gum are two vices I just can't give up

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
