Vomiting & Unable to Get/Keep Liquids Down

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I am 3 weeks post-op (today in fact). For the past 2 weeks I've had a problem getting my liquids in and keeping them in. shakes, yogurt, and even sometimes Water comes up. I've tried Crystal Light, and even Gatoraide etc. But still, I'm extremely weak, no energy! I went to the E.R. and they explained that (1) liquids go down slow as expected, but is emptying out my stomach on a delay; and (2) this is probably because my stomach is still swollen from the procedures. IDK and am getter more and more worried. Next week marks my 4 weeks post-op and I'm supposed to move to pureed foods, then the week after to soft foods...but not being able to get in my liquids now is making me worry about how I'd transition to the next stage. I have a follow-up appt tomorrow with my doctor, but wanted to vent and see if anyone could offer me a few words of encouragement *tear*

ask for a prescription to Carafate... It is used to treat ulcers, but can also help in this situation.

I started having stomach spasams after I ate anything about 5 weeks out. Taking this medication before eating helped a great deal. I is a liquid that coats and protects your stomach lining.

hope you feel better soon !

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(.

Maybe you should go back to clears like the first week? In my instructions, it says to do that for two days and then try adding more things in and see how it goes.

Are you taking Nexium or something like it?

Good luck and I hope this doesn't last long and you're feeling better soon!

i was told to take little sips all day - sips not gulps like we are used to drinking. My sug. said to drink between 16 and 20 oz, sipping, it should take an hour.

hope you feel better soon.

Have you called your surgeon? This seems extreme for 3 weeks out. I would also wonder about a stricture?

Please get in contact with your surgeon asap, if you at 3 weeks out are not able to keep any fluids you will quickly dehydrate. It doesn't sound right to me and I hope you get some help from your surgeons office. Good luck and best wishes!

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. The good news is that it will get better. think Baby Steps. I'll be honest with you, I've had troubles from day one. I was not able to keep all of my liquids down until just after two months out from surgery. Sometimes warm liquids were easier than cold things. I was in and out of the hospital being dehydrated and constipated. Please push the fluids as much as you can. My surgeon gave me anti-nausea medicine to help me keep from throwing up as much. There are a few over the counter anti-nausea liquid medicines - ask the surgeon first. They did help me at least keep down what I could get down.

If you are not able to get enough liquids down you will dehydrate fairly easy and should be very aware of the problem. You do not want to let it go at all. I know you have probably felt like kicking yourself for doing the surgery at all, I think we all have at one time or another, but remember there is a goal, and time is a big factor. It doesn't happen overnight. There are so many helpful people here. You are not alone. Know that we're here to help, listen, and provide a shoulder if need be. I wish you the best and will keep you as well as all of us in my prayers.

Brightest Blessings,

Does your surgeon know that you're having trouble keeping things down?

It's very easy to become dehydrated. That just causes more nausea. I would call the doctor immediately and not wait for the day of your follow

up appointment.

Thanks everyone! The anti-nausea medical comes right back up (pill or liquid form). Doc knows and after tests says I have no leaks or anything...just tells me to keep at trying to get my Protein Shakes in as much as I can as well as my Vitamin suppliments (Multi, B, D)...I'm doing a LITTLE better just (like you all said) taking baby steps! Again, thanks everyone for your input and words of encouragement!!!!

You can also ask for a "Scopolamine Patch". This is a time release patch that will last for about ten days. If you are able to get your nausea under control then you might be able to get your fluids in. Talk to your doctor about this an an option too. I had one of these after my surgery and it worked great! I really hope you can get feeling better.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
