Protein Ponderings

I was trying to get in all my Protein today, once again, and finally managed it after missing for a bunch of days.

Got to thinking.... I don't believe that I ate 40 Grams of protein a day BEFORE my Sleeve surgery. Yes, I ate a LOT... but mostly carbs. I had meat maybe once a day.... had oatmeal & fruit for Breakfast, a CARB snack, maybe a salad for lunch, or Soup.... some protein at dinner but everything else was Carbs.

When you come to think of it, eating this much protein every day takes effort, and I don't think "most people," at least not most overweight people, do eat 40-60 Grams per day, do you???

Starting to wonder WHY we need so much protein after surgery. Is it the actual surgery itself that changes our needs, or is it just HYPE... some NUTs on a rampage.

WHY do we have to eat so much protein when people who don't have this surgery do not eat that much.... any ideas?

According to my NUT, eating Protein has several benefits. It keeps you feeling fuller for longer, helps you eat less calories, and helps to ensure that you maintain your muscle mass as you loss weight.

I became a huge fan of Protein when i lost weight after band removal. (No VSG, but hoping soon). Had Protein at every meal; reduced carbs, low sugar. Snacks were protein. When I tracked my protein on online food diaries, I actually get close to 50-60 grams a day, sometimes more. Lindsey is absolutely correct -- protein does help you stay full longer. It's also better for all-around metabolism, cell growth, keeping muscle and losing fat, etc. They are "good calories" as long as they're lean. Even some Proteins with some fat are good for you -- cheeses, nuts. In moderation, of course! (LOL, like I eat cheese and nuts in moderation.) I'd worked with a nutritionist for many years before I test drove the lap band. (Bad three year experience) She always was pushing Proteins. SO, eat your proteins!

P.S. One of the things my nutritionist told me -- and I've subsequently read similar things -- is that you need .07 grams of protein for every pound you weigh. That's a lot of protein!

Well, The amount of Protein I eat now is the equivalent of about 4 average/small chicken breasts. Before surgery I may have had a Breakfast that incorporated a LOT of sausage or bacon (or both), a lunch of more deli meat than I now eat in 3 days, and a dinner involving more meat than I now eat in a week's worth of dinners. And that's not including all the cheese that would have accompanied, or been eaten on its own as a snack. I'm pretty sure that I was getting among other things, a whole lotta protein! =P

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
