Lump in my throat

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I got Sleeved in Dec - whenever I eat something no matter how small. I always get a lump in my throat. I sometimes get it when I drink too. Is that normal? How long does it last? I am on week 4 and everything is going great already down 30 pounds. Does this feeling ever go away?

Thanks

I didn't have a sore throat at all, although I have had a sore throat with other non-abdominal surgery. It usually went away after a week though.

Sounds like your throat may have got scratched during the op (they put a tube down your throat). Why don't you see your family to doc and have them check it out, as 4 weeks out sounds like quite a long time to still be feeling sore. You might just need something simple like a course of antibiotics. I'm sure it's nothing major, but it's worth having it looked at. HTH! cool.gif

It is not a soar throat but rather a lump in my throat like I am already full but this comes after the first morsel of food and sometimes when I drink.

Weird - I've not had that ever. Docs like looking down throats so it's still worth seeing yours if you can. cool.gif

That happens with me, and what you are probably going through is heartburn/acid reflux. It was horrible at first like something was trapped there. It would happen the minute I would take a drink or try to swallow any bit of food. If your doctor doesn't have you on a PPI call the office and see if they can prescribe you one, and if they do have you on one, see if they can try a different one.. "I'm using Nexium" It's really helping me with the Lump in The Throat filling and I am able to get more liquids down now. Never be afraid to call your surgeons office to explain to them what's going on.. They are there for you as a patiant, and they will help you get through anything, but first you have to make the call.. Best of Luck!!

I have a hiatal hernia (which was deemed not bad enough to warrant repair) on top of that I have what's called a Schatzki ring on top of that which is a constricting ring that made a small bowl like area above my stomach / diaphragm. When I ate too fast it would make me choke and feel like I had a big lump in my throat. The doctor said it was irritating nerves and telegraphing the pain from the bottom to the top.

Perhaps yours is the same, the "pain" from the food / drink is telegraphing the sensation from your stomach to your throat.

But please follow TiajaunaPlications advise and go to the doctor, he may want to scope you.

Hi TCL, I am going through exactly what you are describing! Whenever I eat anything however small I get the same feeling and also like a really tight feeling across my chest/throat area like I have really really over indulged but this happens after a couple of mouthfuls of liquid/puree. I had my op on 8th December but have not been taking the ppi, I forgot about them to be honest!! After reading many threads I think this is why I am getting the problems, I have tracked down the drugs and as from today I am going to take them, I will keep you updated and let you know if this helps.

Not sure if you are the same but I am also getting really bad hunger pangs even after this happens, it is very frustrating! I was told because the hormone that makes you hungry resides in the part of the stomach removed I wouldn't feel hungry again, this was a BIG selling point for me but so far it's not the case!

Jannb - Thanks - Let's keep in touch. I am really curious what is happening. A better way of desribing it is liking having to burp immediately after one little bite. Thanks.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
