Ive got a date… and a pre-op question

Recommended Posts

January 27th at 11am… yeahhhh and after the first submission to insurance! I have no been put on any pre-op diet!?! I will be seeing my dr for my pre- op on the 25th and was told I would get told about any pre-op diet then… Is this okay. Most people I see are not very strict pre-op diets for weeks?!?!? Is this okay?

I think you could put yourself on a liquid diet. I did it for 2 weeks before surgery, and why should you not have to suffer this way? Just kidding. Actually I think the preop diet made me dehydrated. I would suggest doing it yourself, but not going so fanatical that you get weak or dehydrated before surgery. I think it did help in that it wasn't such a shock to not be able to eat after surgery bc I was already kind of use to it. Of course I still suffered, but mentally it helped me not to mention the extra boost of weight loss.

Each doc does it different. Just make sure you have a good doctor so you don't get complications. Has he done at least 100 sleeves? Mine hadn't, but I didn't know to ask for that. I'm pretty sure mine has by now though.

I will be on full liquids for two weeks prior to surgery and clear liquid for two days before surgery. My surgeon does this (as he explains) to cause the liver to produce less digestive juices and shrink it out of the way.

I will be following this plan religiously to assist my surgeon in doing an excellent job on my surgery. I've also read that if you have a fatty liver it can be slippery and difficult to manuver out of the way during surgery.

I wish you the best for your surgery and recovery!

My surgeon had me on full liquids for a week prior to surgery. It was not the most fun week of my life, but not too hideous either. As this was the week of Christmas, I did slip on Christmas Eve---worried the rest of the time that I was going to be rejected or something as soon as he saw my liver! Needless worry!

No pre-op diet required here either (and I had a 6 months insurance-required wait time) so I had plenty of time to diet, but since it wasn't required then I didn't do anything pre-op. Just follow whatever your surgeon's plan is to a "T". Every surgeon is different and the plans pre and post-op vary wildly. So just go by what your surgeon requires and you should be fine!

My surgeon just told me to eat totally normally, and not to do any kind of dieting prior to surgery. I am a bit envious of all the rules and guidelines you get in the US, because I don't really know what to do apart from all the pre-tests.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
