OUCH - 4 weeks pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Well my BMI is over 50, therefore I qualify for an unheard of FOUR WEEK pre-op diet.

Looks like I'm purchasing a lot more Slimfast shakes from Amazon, plus more Protein drinks!

I'm also starting a YouTube journal, will post a link once I get it up and running.

I can't even express how sorry I am!!!! LOL

What's your diet? I assume it isn't just the dreaded liquid diet but more what I had, ie. 800-900 calories? I had to buy "their food" but in the end, it worked out find.

Just remember, you'll come out the other side a better man with a much easier life! What is 4 weeks compared to forever?

You can do it - start a blog, it is much easier to follow for most and I can read it at work :-)

It's liquid!

Up to 5 high Protein SlimFast shakes (I'm using powder + milk, cheaper and you get more liquid)

One meal = 5 oz lean meat + 2 cups veggies

FatSecret says I'm consuming 1200 cals.

I'm doing 1 shake for Breakfast at 8am, lunch at noon, then Dickeys BBQ brisket platter with double green Beans at 4pm.

I toss the bread and sauce into the trash.

Then another shake at 8pm, go to bed at midnight.

I'll keep my FatSecret logs updated every day from now on.

Good LUCK!! And I never say good luck... :) The only worse diet I've ever heard was a friend had to do 4 weeks clear liquid diet pre surgery for the band. I thought that was INSANE!! It's hard to do this sort of thing POST op... I can't even think about pre-op.

My pre-op diets were non existent with the band, and for my sleeve I did 10 days low carb. That was all.

Hugs Doug!! You got this!!

My BMI is only 44 and I have been on optifit (medifast but without the one "real" meal) since Dec. 8th and my surgery is not until January 24th. I start liquids only in a few days.

While I think my surgeon is much more demanding than a lot of people on the board, I am grateful in a way. I have already lost about 25 lbs! I am now used to counting my Protein, calories, carbs, fat, Fiber, etc... I swear, I thought I would die the first couple of weeks of this diet. I have found the secret to be to NOT eat anything that is outside the plan. If you do you become completely ravenous again for a few days.

You can do it... I know because if I can then anybody can! lol!

I have to do a 6month doctor supervised diet before I can even get approved for surgery... They are supposed to call me to make an appointment, but I'm still waiting. I was really hoping to have surgery sooner. I wish you a quick trip to your goal.

I was just thinking. The doc put me on a starter diet of two meals replaced with Protein Drinks, one high Protein and veggie meal, and 1-2 small protein Snacks from Jun until almost surgery. I did a three day liquid diet before surgery. The great thing is that in Jun, my palpitated liver felt enlarged and soft (fattty) by the time of the surgery I had a beautiful liver. I have photos to prove it. Also, you get to eat. That all liquid stuff pre surgery is a killer.

Just one question? Aren't most slimfast products high on carbs? My Carbs on pre op diet were less than 15 a day to ptomote liver shrinkage. There are cheaper high protien drinks with low carbs out there like Max at the Vitamin Shoppe. I know they wanted me to use Bariatric Advantage drinks costing a hundred dollars for 2 weeks so I toolk the nutritional info go the vit shoppe and found Max to be the same. I used that and Premier protien shakes formy two week All liquid diet.< /p>

Yes, they are. The surgeon's sheet says "1200 calories, 120gm carbs -> lose 5% of starting weight"

So apparently carbs don't matter that much.

Every surgeon is different. Strange, I was told to stay low on carbs because that is what shrinks the liver.

I'm feeling REALLY weak and almost sick. I want to workout, but there's no way, I'd pass out on the machine.

Does this get better, or stays like this for all 4 weeks until surgery?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
