question about the liquid phase (I'm sooo thirsty!!)

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I was just banded eight days ago, and I've been having major problems with keeping any liquid down at all. If I even drink more than a teaspon of Water within a ten to fifteen minute span, I get unbearable pains in my stomach, and slightly nautious. But here comes the really bad part....I know my stomach can't handle more than a teaspoon, but I just get so dang thirsty, and that icy cold 'riptide rush' gatorade bottle is at my parched lips, and that teiny weiny little teaspoon of liquid just doesn't do it for me, so I tip the bottle back slowly and drink a little more (mabe only 1 & 1/2 teaspoon more), and as I'm doing this, I know dang well than in a second my stomach is going to kill me for it. So I drink the 3 & 1/2 teaspoons anyways, and then here it comes....the slight nautiousness, the tight unbearable pressure pains...so I bend over and rid myself of this god-aweful Fluid with the help of a couple fingers down the throat. And then it's gone....the pain is just gone! But of course I'm fricken thirsty as hell again, so I tell myself that I'm going to do it right next time, and that I'm only going to drink ONE tiny little teaspoon every ten to twenty minutes....but when the times comes for that next drink, I'm just so ravenously thirsty that I can't drink just one teaspoon, I have to have just a little more....and then I throw-up again and the whole prcess starts all over again! And I'm beginning to get sorta worried becasues I really don't think I'm getting much fliud down at all, and I've already lost 20 pounds in eight days (I know, I know....I never thought I'd hear myself complain about something like that in a million years, but here I am complaining that I'm losing weight just a little too fast!) Has anyone else had similar problems with not being able to get enough to drink? Or am I just trying to drink too mush, too fast (even thought I consider one little teaspoon every ten to twenty minutes to be pure and utter torture as well as fluid deprivation)? If anyone has any feed back I'd appreciate it a lot!

Hi Amberose,

This hasn't happened to me, but if I were you I'd definitely call my doctor. You are risking becoming extremely dehydrated and may need some IV fluids. Dehydrations is a dangerous thing....talk to your doc before it gets worse!

Good luck

Susan helms from the mexican bandsters yahoo group had the exact same problem as you, she could not keep any fluids down and actually not even her own saliva. She called her doctor and was admitted into the hospital for 2 days on IV. After which she felt a lot better.

Here is the post she put on the group

"Thanks to all of you who responded about my problem with thirst. I have been in contact with Dr. XXX throughout the night and I am hoping I have turned the corner on this thirst thing. I have what he calls Late Post Operative Obstruction which he says happens but very infrequently. I was able to swallow enough liquids in the hospital to have my IV removed and be released. The next day at home was fine and then BAM I swelled all up again. Tiny sips of ice-cold Gatorade every 10 minutes have stayed down so I hope this is the solution for me . I can't say enough about how kind and concerned Dr. XXX and his patient liason, XXX , have been. Sue H."

Great advice, always call your doctor if there's a problem. You really don't want to dehydrate.

But I need to warn you about vomiting so often, especially if you've only been banded for 8 days. That makes the stoma swell even more, making it more difficult for things to get through, and you risk slippage of the band. That, you *really* don't want to do. You need to allow your band time to anchor into place. If your doctor clears you of dehydration and you don't need IV fluids, just wash your mouth out and spit the liquid that you can't handle out. Maybe you need to suck on ice chips or something instead..so you can't take a swallow that's too large. But please, stop vomiting all the time, you can only do damage that way.

I want to thank you guys for your posts. After reading them I decided that maybe I should go to the hospital to see if there was anything wrong......and yes, there was something VERY wrong! For one thing I was dehyrdrated, and the other was that I still had barrium trapped in my stomach from the upper GI I had right after my surgery. So I had to go all the way back to Mexico and have that band taken out (it had slipped), and get a whole new one put in. It took a lot longet for my body to recover from the surgery the second time (I'm still hurting), but I'm glad that I got that taken care of. Thanks again for your advice, without it I might not have gotten the medical attention I needed. Thanks again!:)

I am so glad you posted and all the veterans here helped you get the right help!!!

I bet you have been sore! You've been through a lot.

When something like that happens do you have to pay for the correction? Or just the trip there?

I've heard of this happening before. You probably need to be on an IV because your stomach is so swollen. It may need extra time healing and the throwing up only makes it worse. When you can't even get a teaspoon down there is something wrong. Please call your doctor. It is better to be safe than sorry.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
