Thanksgiving Wake Up Call

Recommended Posts

This Thanksgiving was my first since having my surgery on July 13th. I've really done very well and have lost just about 100lbs in the 4.5 months since surgery (including 15 lbs before surgery). Anyway, my kids and I travelled out of state to spend the holiday with relatives and we had a very nice holiday. One thing did scare me though -- I was able to eat a whole lot more than I would have expected. I snacked a lot in the hours before dinner (a couple of chips here and a couple of pretzels there) and then at dinner, I was able to eat a small plate of most of the dishes. Granted, I ate a whole lot less than I would have in the good/bad old days, but it did make me keenly aware that I will need to be more diligent about not sliding back into bad eating habits. As we all have been told, this surgery is a tool and it can be misused and mistreated. I know for myself, I will need to watch that.

I couldn't agree more Brian, I noted that if left unchecked I could graze my way into some serious calories! I jumped back on the bandwagon yesterday morning and am going to try a different approach for the Christmas holiday. At least though we are aware of it and find it unacceptable. That is a good sign that we are conscious of our eating and not just shoveling things in without a thought of the consequences.

Wow on the 100 pounds! Thanks for being so honest about the holiday eating. It is something I fear after surgery. It is good to be prepared and know that it is does take hard work to get to your goals.

Hi, I noticed that for me I kept picking at my plate even though I was full and then an hour later still visiting with family I snacked. I don't like to eat out or with family anymore because I worry about it.

That is so unfair, 100 pounds! (congratulations) I had my surgery on July 14th and have only lost 50 and now it looks like my loss has come to a screeching halt even though I have followed the guidance to the letter! What have you done that your weight loss is so awesome? Exercise, food, etc.?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
