Has Anyone Cheated On Their Post-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

Just curious and be honest if anyone has cheated on their post-op diet and what the consequences were? I feel so hungry and have honestly been contemplating putting something in the food processor and having a few bites of a mushie.

No, I have not cheated but I really want some real food. This liquid diet is soooo hard. Its even harder when my husband and kids eat everything they want in front of me and the smells are in the house. How cruel, they ate pizza which i love and choc chip Cookies which I could eat 10 or more of. Now, I would kill for just a bite!!! I know how you are feeling but do not cheat, it is not worth the risk of causing a leak. I would cheat if I could but I cannot afford going to the hospital with complications of leak or something else. Hang in there, just take it one day at a time! We will get there soon!

I personally can't even think of cheating, just the thought HURTS! LOL I'm on Clear Liquids and am NOT hungry at all! I have had some "cravings or head hunger" but the thought of actual food going into my tummy really scares me! LOL

When I was on the liquid phase (yogurt, pudding, Soups, Protein shakes) I cheated once. I had mashed potatoes. I didn't think it would be any harder on my body than yogurt or Soup. WRONG! It HURT! I guess it wasn't that bad of a cheat, and I was a few weeks out, but I should not have done it! And, it didn't taste good anyway. I remember wanting to just chew on something during that phase, but its not worth the risk.

I've cheated :( It seems like I can get anything I want down.. I got a piece of chicken stuck, it wasn't fun, but my surgeon recomended papaya tablets incase anything gets stuck and boy let me tell you they do work!!! Anyway don't be like me and cheat :( if you do make sure it's something healthy!! and chew a thousand times lol!!

While I haven't cheated, just the experience trying to eat has given me enough reasons not to want to cheat -- learning when I was full, what foods I can and cannot tolerate, and the change in my own tastebuds have taught me that I should just stick with the plan. Trust me, you don't want to be able to cheat!

I have to confess that last night my husband, who has been wonderful through all of this, made an awesome dinner for him and the kids (homemade hamburgers and french fries...smothered in gravy, of course! LOL!)

I was already 'jumping ahead' on the diet to week 3 and trying a scrambled egg, but I just had to try one of those french fries...I cut that thing up small and chewed and chewed and chewed. It went down fine and I felt ok. So of course I had to have another because I wasn't full, right?! Ended up having 4 fries - even said out loud to my husband that I still wasn't full, but I should stop.

Well, when I walked away and went to sit down at my computer, I felt awful, like I might vomit. I didn't, but it showed me that I had made a bad choice and it wasn't worth getting sick over. The fries were ok...I was really just missing the chewing action for sure.

I laughed my butt off when I first read this post but I ended up doing the same thing last night. Your right, the seasoning from the chip was really really good but it was soooooooooooooo hard not to eat that chip. Five weeks of liquids (2 pre-op 3 post-op) is just way to much and is really beginning to get to me. I have to continually pray for strength and remind myself if I do the wrong thing I could end up with a leak and back in the hospital and start all over - I could not handle that.

No, I did not cheat at all on my post op diet.

However, I'm very thankful in that I felt repulsed by food. I could barely swallow Water so I just wasn't in any hurry to actually eat anything. broth was enough for me during my clears. In fact when it was time for the full liquids, half my day I was still doing broths.

If you are really hungry, I suggest calling your surgeon to see if he thinks it's ok to move to the next stage. Ive heard of others doing this with the Surgeon's ok. Good luck!!

I wouldn't call it cheating, but I moved from liquids to mushie food earlier than program stated. However, I did this after getting ok from dietician. As I recovered extremely quickly and felt great she was happy for me to move on to something which got my stomach working out again. My plan stated liquid diet (yoghurts, Soups etc) for 10-14 days and I moved to pureed food on day 7.

I would suggest you speak to your surgeons office to get personal advice. They give general guidelines to fit everybody, but in most cases it is very individual depending on how you recover, how you feel etc.

Good luck!

I'm currenty on full lliquids and Cream of Wheat (original flavor only) is allowed. I make it with soy milk (10 proteins) and sweetener. Last night I found a Cream of Wheat with high protein(6)/high fiber(4). 1 pack will last me about 3 times. This has helped me SO much. I chew it even though I really don't need to but it just gives me the feeling that I'm actually eating something.

I LOVE potatos and since every other commercial on TV seems to have mashed potatos I have come up with a cure for my craving for potatos... I get the Campbels Cream of Potato Soup and mix it with my high Protein soy milk (plain flavor). Then use the emersion blender, so there's absolutly no chunks. It's sooo yummy.

For my pizza craving I make Tomato soup... I know that's a stretch but it's been working for me.

Now these are not that high in Protein so I make sure I get all/most of that it before I have any of these

Now if I could find something to cure my cheese cravings, haha.

Kelli :)

Please keep praying and I will pray for you as well!!! I have said it before but I am seriously working on fear that something bad will happen so I am following everything to a T!!!!!!!! Luckily though, I don't feel hungry at all but I know I must eat and drink! So far today I am actually got down 29oz of Water, 2Tbls of Jello and now I'm working on a little SF/FF cheesecake pudding!!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
