Weight Loss - Zero Effort

My surgery date is Nov 29th and I will start my pre-op diet on Monday. I weighed myself this morning and was surprised to find I had lost 7lbs over the past couple of weeks. It hit me; I see a means to an end and have not been stressing about food or overeating. I have not been over analyzing my food choices, I just eat!

I read many posts on here regarding the low carb diets, etc that so many are following. I don’t want to treat this new journey as a diet although I do understand that my body will require Proteins, etc. Diets have failed me long term. I think by nature, a person will make better food choices as they are losing weight because they make you feel better. If I want a bite of dessert, I’m going to have it or a bite of any other food that I would normally beat myself up over having.

What a great feeling to know that I have lost weight without trying. :D

That's the approach I'm taking now I'm nearly 3 and a half months out. At first I did stick to a "diet" plan, but when I went to my nutritionist she said it was ok once in a while to treat yourself. In the past I always used to cut out everything I liked then binge on it,that's what got me to the situation I was in before surgery. Now that I've lost nearly 70% of my excess weight I treat my self without feeling guilty. Yesterday I went to a friend for lunch, just has carrot and coriander Soup so I had 2 tiny bites of the chocolate cheesecake for dessert, still put every single bite in my calorie count. You'll do great!! I lost 81.5 lbs in just under 5 months. My surgeon's goal was a loss of 78 lbs! Yes, I am below goal!! Yay!! From the beginning when I attended the seminar a couple of months before surgery, they stressed "this is not a diet, it is a way of life". I loved that, diets had done nothing but failed for the past thirty years. I would lose and regain. For the first time EVER, I am confident I will keep the weight off. I AM in control. I am not hungry, I eat because I need to and because it tastes good. It's wonderful. My doctor does not worry about carbs, although I cut down on them myself before surgery to help with the pre-op diet and have just continued. Protein is the key to success in my opinion, I make sure I get in between 60 and 75 per day....one reason is because I did NOT want to have any hair issues and I have not! Knock on wood!! This has been disgustingly easy.....I love my sleeve! Now I am in maintenence, adding IN some calories, they said "live a little" - I allow myself a few bites of pumpkin bread, and that is plenty. I do NOT want more. I am trying to FIND things, healthy things to snack on to add calories to my diet because I cannot eat more at my meals. I have made up snack bags of almonds, half oz bags! Who'd have thought I'd ever NEED to make myself eat!!??? Good luck....you'll love your sleeve!!!!!

It really is pretty effortless to lose weight with the sleeve, and while some may view low carbing it a "diet", I surely did not. I think the only reason I didn't see it that way is because at every meal, I never had room for wasted carbs if I wanted to get my Protein in from food sources. I puked on Protein Drinks so I had no other choice to low carb it if I wanted to get in 3 solid ounces of protein per meal. I also realized that my body runs best on low carbs, my energy is through the roof, give me more than 2-3oz of mashed potatoes or mac-n-cheese, and I need a nap. I saw it as a lifestyle change, and a lifelong commitment to better choices. So, if it ended up low carb then so be it. I never had a stall, not one week passed that I didn't lose weight so obviously something went right for me. And, I think that's the key to individual success, doing what works best for each person, and how they want to lose weight. I could have taken a year to get to goal with over 125lbs to lose, but really I'm not an endurance girl, and I wanted to sprint to the finish line and worry about maintenance later.

I felt the same as you, and still do. The last thing I wanted was to be on yet another diet. I don't want to have to count or journal anything, lol, I have been doing that all my life with no success. That is the beauty of the sleeve. For me, I quit eating when I am full, which happens very quickly. I mostly make healthy choices with my eating, but when I don't, I don't sweat it. I know my sleeve will not allow me to over-indulge like I used to. Now, if I want something, I eat it, just everything in moderation.

To be honest, I've never been able to do low carb because no matter what, I always wanted to eat more more more. Now, I simply do NOT have enough room to eat enough anyway. I literally have to eat mostly only meats because 2 oz of meat isn't enough protein. I do have my hi Fiber oatmeal but is usually on a meal all its own.

I have noticed that eating this way that my belly fat is really going away really fast. It's great!

...and it's true, it really REALLY does feel effortless. I'm not working out as much as I used to, and I don't feel like I'm starving all the time. ITS GREAT!!! This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I'm very happy!

Wow you all are such a great inspiration to me.. I am being sleeved in late december 2010. Yall have really said alot that has made it hopeful to me to acheiving my goals..I have been a member for about a month now and I have really been doing some research on the sleeve and yall have really helped in answering my question without me asking..Right now I am really scatter brained. Going back and fourth questioning my decesion. I know it is over a month away, but I am as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room of rocking chairs..

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
