Heart problems prior to Gastric Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am curious of anyone who has had the gastric sleeve procedure had previous heart problems prior getting the sleeve?

Me too........

I was scheduled to have the Roux en Y in June 2009, but instead had a triple bypass in March of 2009.

Hi Don,

In speaking with the PA in my surgeon's office, cardiac patients are pretty common. My cardiologist was against the surgery, not for the danger, but he didnt believe in WLS. He made me go through a treadmill stress test, then an achocardiogram, and finally a nuclear stress test. In the end he realized I was determined to go through with the surgery. He finally signed off and I am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. Send your prayers my way. God willing I will be able to report back to you my expereinces,

My endocrinologist was iffy about it, but surprisingly my cardiologist was enthusiastic about it. He said it was the smartest thing I could do.

I am over 100 units of insulin a day now and that makes traditional weight loss almost impossible.

44 hours to GO <<<<<<<<<<<

I'm 57, had a heart attack 3 years ago then devloped atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist encouraged my surgery and I chose an excellent hospital, surgeon and anesthesiologist. Have done very well but my blood pressure hasnt improved much yet but I havent reached my goal of 300 lb loss. My diabetes has sure improved and every pound I lose takes a load off my heart. I would encourage anyone with multiple health problems considering surgery to work through their specialists because it takes a team to safely do surgery. Needless to say, I was not a candidate for foreign surgery.

Yep. Genetic heart issue here. It did impact where I could have the surgery along with all the pre-surgery tests. I actually would have liked to have gone to a different hospital but this place has the top cardiac care in town, so that's where I'll be. Since my issue is genetic (brother died from same issue) it's not yet reared it's ugly head but I have to be cautious.

Glad to here there are others in this boat.

I have to take nitro as needed for my problems but my doc is more worried about me losing the weight than not. He said if I don't I will die from the weight putting the extra stress on my heart anyway. He too is not a major fan of having it done in Mexico and I will be his 1st patient that did it but he is supportive. I do know that as long as your docs all clear you it is fine. Hubby had a heart attack a few years ago and he is prob healthier than me now even at 400+ but his doc said the weight isn't coming down fast enough and referred him for surgery. So that should tell you there are docs that believe it will help more than hurt.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
