Sleep Apnea and Weight Loss Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I just had my sleep study done, and recieved the results today. I have tested positive for Sleep Apnea, and have been scheduled to be fitted for a c-pap mask/machine. I want to believe that this is a sure fire thing for my surgery, but I'm still not convinced.. If I have tested positive is this considered a co-morbidity? If not is it still a good reason for insurance to approve me for surgery? I finish out my 6 months on the 15th, and I am over the moon with excitement to think this could really happen, but in the back of my mind I keep telling myself not to get to excited because they could deny me, and given our finance situation we couldn't afford the surgery if it was pushed to the start of the new year. As of now I have reached my out of pocket and the surgery would be covered 100%. If you tested positive for sleep apnea did insurance approve first try? Or did they request more test?

I was told the expensive CPAP machine was OPTIONAL for surgery, and OPTIONAL for daily use. During surgery, the anesthesiologist will just "make some adjustments" which eliminates the need for the machine. And of course after surgery once you've dropped weight, your sleep apnea will probably vanish.

Are you sleeping fine without it?

If so, call your surgeon and see if your answer is the same as mine. Which will save you some cash.

I can tell you that in Denmark sleep Apnea is considered a comorbidity (if it obstructive because of weight). Therefore our government would pay for the operation, if your BMI is over 35 + sleep apnea.

So I am quite sure, that Sleep apnea is wellknown to be linked to overweight (insurance wise, I think).

I have it too - and the Darth Vader machine.

I don't even have an appoinment for the fitting and sleep over with the machine until the 1st of December.. Hopefully by then I will be approved by insurance for the surgery.. I hardly get any sleep at all do to the tossing and turning which I thought was caused by the pain I feel in my leg, but it has started to affect my days. I wake up tired and stay tired throughout the day. If I'm approved for surgery and I start loosing weight will I still need to be fitted for the c-pap mask/machine?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
