recovery time off work?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My name is Krista, and I am relatively new to this forum. I have not been sleeved yet. I'm still trying to complete all the insurance requirements. What I'm wondering is how much time were you off work after the surgery? If I need more than a week off, I will have to wait until March due to a coworker being gone for 3 months on maternity leave. Is a week completely unrealistic for the sleeve surgery? I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Krista

I personally think a week is unrealistic. Maybe two weeks would be enough. My doctor told me 4 weeks, but I was a lapband removal/sleeve surgery. A friend who had a lapband was told 3 weeks off. I guess depending on what you do, you might be okay with 2. Good luck!

I took 4 weeks off and it was perfect. I was tore up after my sleeve. NO ENERGY at all. Emotionally and physically drained. By day 14 I was feeling good. It was nice to nap as needed and really take time to heal.

I have read where sleevers literally are sleeved and the next day shopping (???) That's so hard for me to believe for that was not the case with me, but everyone is different.

I would say if you can take as much time off as possible to adjust. Just my humble opinion :D

What kind of work do you do?

I was told to plan for six weeks for recovery. I am three weeks into the recovery period and have had severe nausea for the last two days. The firts week went ok but last week and this one has been rough; No way could I go back to work in four weeks. Walking is ok but I do a lot at work and one city block level is as far as I can go before needing rest right now. I would plan on 4-8 weeks for a full recovery not this BS of the next day you'll be shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, too, am taking 4 weeks before I go back to work. I am in my 3rd week and just now starting to see a little bit of energy return. I am hoping that by the end of week 4 I really am ready to go back because I am going back to the busiest weekend of our year as well as lots of travel in the couple of weeks after that!

i was sleeved on the first and was back to work on the 7th ... i did not feel like this was an unattainable time to get back into the real world.. i just didnt baby myself and I was definitely a little fatigued but it is absolutely possible and doable... just really depends on how you presonally feel!! on the 3rd i walked around a large outside mall and went to a movie.. i find if your mobile and get up and do some walking around your recovery is potentially alot faster ... but this all depends on how you look at it

I think it really just depends and you might not know until after. I totally thought I would be good after a week because I generally heal pretty fast and I'd had two c-sections so I thought I have a good sense for how i would feel. What a joke. NO WAY was I ready after a week!! I am over 3 weeks now and totally exhausted, but definitely getting better each day. I am going back to work on Monday and it will be 3 weeks, 5 days. The first week back I am going back 1/2 time.

I totally think it depends on what kind of work you do. I work in a clerical setting and could have gone back after a week, but My FMLA papers stated I could have up to 4 weeks off. I went back after 2, but if I had to 1 week was doable. Good luck.:D

I agree that it depends on you and what type of work you do. While in one of my classes at the bariatric center, a woman came in to say hi and told us she was sleeved on a Friday and went back to work on Monday. Even though I don't work, I can't imagine having to have gone back to work sooner than 2 weeks. I wasn't in pain from the surgery, but the gas pains were still there and dealing with nausea, heartburn and reflux....there's no way I could have done it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
