Where is it stated?? Aetna question...

Recommended Posts

Where exactly does it state Aetna wants a weight history?? I have my copy of Bariatric Surgery criteria and I don't see ANYTHING which asks for weight history.

Can someone shed light on this? I'm only hearing about this requirement on the forums, not in my paperwork.

thanks!

It was on the requirements given to me by my surgeon. Here's their page:

Obesity Surgery

I have that same page and combed it. This is all i can find:

presence of severe obesity that has persisted for at least the last 2 years (24 months)

and in the 'background' section, this:

Requirement that Obesity be Longstanding (Present for 2 or More Years):

Obesity surgery is not indicated for persons with transient increases in weight (Collazo-Clavell, 1999). According to the Guidelines of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinology (1998), “Surgical treatment of obesity may be considered only in carefully selected patients [where] … obesity has been present for at least 5 years.”

So...... ???? History, yea or nea?

Doug, how many years did your Dr say?

History is required for mine. I got a little happy sheet from the surgeon's office that says, "Medical records that document a 2-year history of obesity ..."

And they gave me a waiver to obtain doctor records from my PCP for the past 3 years.

Yesterday my Dr said Aetna didn't ask for weight history as a requirement, but all their other patients w/Aetna were required to provide a 5 yr history. I ended up gathering all my own medical records (ran around to the various places and got copies for myself) and gave my Dr the copies that indicated weights from 2007 on.

I'm sure it's adequate but until I see their big 'approval' stamp i'm cautiously optimistic. :thumbup1:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
