How do I know if I need an acid blocker?

Recommended Posts

I am confused by how my stomach feels these days. Hard to know when I am hungry (seems to be every three hours). It gets rumbly and gurgly. I am currently on creamed Soups w/ a little milk in them. I am drinking decaffienated tea (tiny bit) and tons of Water. I also have a couple sips of apple juice. My tummy feels a little burning sensation and gurgly. THe doctors office gave me some liquid antacid and some crap that looks like mylanta. I know a lot of people have to use the acid blockers for a while...does it sound like that is what I need? If so which meds are the correct ones?

Dr. Aceves sends everyone home with a 3-month prescription for Nexium. I take one every morning and feel fine.

i've been pretty lucky, have never needed a acid blocker and am 8 months out. . some say to take it religiously, and some say that the hunger sensation is a sign for an acid blocker. . . i tried that once, but it didn't stop the gurglies. . so i just never bothered with it. . .

Hello, I had my surgery on the 17th of August and my surgeon has never mentioned a need for an acid blocker. Does everyone take it? I see him on Wednesday for my first post-op appointment and will ask him then about the acid blocker. All I can say is I have not felt any hunger at all. Which is kinda cool, the one drawback is I also don't want to drink my Protein or my Water AT ALL EITHER. I really have to push myself to do it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
