Why no drinking while eating?

Recommended Posts

Hiya Julie...

I read a similar article, sorry don't have a link but from but from what I can remember the main reason given was to stay full longer. The example they gave was a sink... if you pour Water down a since it just simply runs through... if you put mushed (chewed) food down a drain it will just sit there... then, if you add water the mush will go down quicker! So, I think that what it was trying to say is to stay fuller longer, don't drink and let the food slowly empty out of the tiny tummy...

Does that make sense?

And - you will get full faster without getting the Protein and nutrients you need if you drink too soon before eating or while eating.

I do take sips with my food, some things just need a little liquid to get it down : )

White meat chicken, beef (steak or roast), melted cheese ... those types of things don't go down well for me at all - even with a little liquid. If that is my only choice of something to eat, I take small bites and eat slowly.

My doctor told me a bit of a different story. He also said it is like a sink - but a sink that is full and "clogged" after eating. By drinking it just adds to the stomach where nowhere to go but up... and I have had that feeling.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
