I need some help. I was approved by my insurance to have the sleeve done. I?ve completed all the pre-op tests. I just need to make my payment for the non-covered fees (which I have the money for) and I can have my surgery scheduled. I?ve been waiting for this day since January. However, for some reason I?m having second thoughts and I?m scared to commit to the surgery now.

In 2004 I was diagnosed with Colon Cancer, I?m doing well and the only problem is the Radiation caused me to go into menopause at the age of 38. Since then I?ve gained 80lbs and my oncologist has been on me to loose the wait. He say?s that obesity is not good; I could come down with cancer again. Needless to say I?ve been trying to loose the wait for the past 6 years and I just can?t do it. My last option is the sleeve.

Is the fear that I have normal, have any of you felt this way? How did you get past it? I?m worried that later on in life my decision to have the surgery will come back to haunt me. Either, by a health issue that will be made worse by the surgery or some other issue. Yet at the same time I know that not having the surgery can be just as harmful to my current health.

My husband initially wasn?t for the surgery; he's since come around some what. My son feels I shouldn't do the surgery and he loves me the way I am, he feels the choice to do this surgery is a drastic choice.

Any advice you can share with me would be greatly appreciated. I hope I'm not the only one out there that felt this way before making the commitment.

Having fears before any surgery is completely normal. You are making a choice to change your body in a permanent way to ensure a healthier (and more likely, longer) life.

Have you talked with your surgeon about your fears? If so, what did he/she say? They know your medical history & can walk you through all the possible complications and concerns. They can also calm fears of the unknown.

You are definitely normal. It's "REAL TIME" now and not research. Just take a deep breath ... remind yourself of all the reasons you want to do this ... compare that to "what if's" ... and decide what you want to do. For me, my reasons for yes definitely outweighed the "what if's" and it was an easy decision for me.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for sharing. Your right, I do need to just take a deep breath and relax. Really, I think I’ve always known that I want this surgery. I just got scared. You definitely helped to reassure me. I’m so happy that we have this site to share…

What a great blessing that you were able to survive cancer, the sleeve is going to give you the opportunity to THRIVE! The anxiety preop is not only normal, but in my opinion healthy. You will have some the first few weeks post op as you learn to use your new tool. Keep posting!!!

Agreed that it is normal and healthy to question having a drastic, unreversable procedure done. But...as someone who was sleeved last Friday (one week ago) I can tell you that I don't regret it for a second. (((hugs)))

I am in the same boat... waiting on insurance approval and flipping from one extrememe to the other decision wise. I have done a lot of research and I feel this is the best decision for me but, that doesn't mean I am entering into it lightly. I have the added worry about my voice on top of it. I receiving professional contracts to sing opera now and I don't want anything to jeopardize these opportunities. In the same breath I need to be as healthy as I can be to do what I love! So I am with you 100%.

Surviving cancer means there's a plan for you and seems God has a lot more for you to do!

That's what it came down to for me. I knew I had a lot more to do on this earth and I wanted to be strong and healthy to do it. I want to run a mile with my son, see my grandchildren, grow old with my hub, and just live! Being obese wasn't going to let me do these things and the bottom line was I was more afraid of losing my life than I was of the surgery and everything that goes along with it.

Your decision is not an easy one and I think its perfectly normal to have doubts. Just keep weighing your pros & cons, pray, and listen.

Good luck to you!!!

I think we all have those preop nerves. Once my 6 months of insurance requirements were complete, I really started to get crazy nervous and uncertain of what I was doing. But, since I am the type who follows through once I initiate something, I made a promise to myself that even though I was having doubts, I would not express them to my surgeon's office and I would not call and cancel anything. I decided to continue on as if I were going through with surgery despite the doubts in my mind. I told myself that if I got to the hospital that morning and my heart and mind were not sure that I would get up and walk out and not go through with it until I was ready. Well, surprise surprise! I was more sure and ready the morning of surgery than I had ever been. I knew that morning that it was meant to be.

I guess my round about point is that you really don't have to decide now. Go forward with everything so that you don't delay your surgery due to uncertainties that will probably go away. If you walk away the morning of surgery, the sky won't fall. But, if you have done your research and discussed the cancer/bariatric connection with your oncologist and bariatric doctor and they both think it's a good plan, then you'll be ready when the time comes to move over to the loser's bench. Best wishes!

Hi There,

Sorry for all you have been through! Be glad you have found out about the sleeve option. I had terrible horrible fears. Even right after the surgery. By the end of the first week I was very excited and happy I did it. I am six weeks out and can't believe it! I eat like a normal person should, small portions. I did this FOR my kids, my mother was very obese growing up and I missed out on a lot of my childhood possibilities. She had no energy to do much for me and she passed away before she was 70 just because of her weight problems and missed out on her grandchildren being born. I also felt like it was drastic beacause like you I had to lose about 75 pounds. I thought I could do that on my own, but after 10 years of up and down I thank god for the sleeve. As long as your doctor gives you the thumbs up, go for it. And by the way my sister was sleeved yesterday!!!!!

I need some help. I was approved by my insurance to have the sleeve done. I?ve completed all the pre-op tests. Melinekesh, Thank you for your support. Its comforting to hear part of your story. I'm curious to know did the sleeve help you reach your goal of 75lbs? Did you have any complications? Since we have same amount of weight to lose, I'm wondering how long it took you.

Hi, I had the menopause unexpectedly early and was finished by 38 so I can relate to you there. Are you able to take any HRT? I did till I was 50, it helped keep my sanity, the menopause made me very depressed and that contributed to more weight gain too.

I am lucky that I have not had cancer though. This was over 5 years ago though for you so you should be able to be treated as normal now. I would recommend you do this op as I have got so much healthier without the weight. I am not taking any meds now and feel 100%.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Jane x

Thanks Jane for the reply. No I'm not able to take any HRT and the past 6 years were hell. Menopause made me depressed as well and I do want to feel healthier. I've decided to have the surgery. Now its to schedule it... I'll be counting on this site and friends to get me through it all. Thank you so much for your postings not just to my question but others as well. It really does help.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
