I have told my parents and a few close friends I am considering having it done. Thanks for this post. I have been thinking about this very thing. With the rate of weight loss, no one would necessarily know, unlike with gastric bypass. I don't really want to tell people, but I don't know what I would say when they ask about my weight loss. I am not good at lying, and I know word will get around any way.

I am still having a little trouble dealing with the fact that I cannot do this on my own. I am a little embarassed about having to have surgery to lose weight, so that's why i don't want to tell many people. Still, I have never had bad thoughts about anyone who had WLS, so I know it's just silly. If there were a surgery that would cure alcholism or drug addiction, it wouldn't be embarssing to have surgery. I know I will get over this feeling, and eventually I will probably tell everyone!

So I'm just curious who all you told about your WLS. I'm pondering this question now and would love to hear from you all.

Thanks,

Mslynn

I told everybody.

Anyone who was stupid enough to speak against my choice was obviously not a friend of mine, and I was perfectly willing to drop the relationship with anyone who did so.

As it turned out, everyone was supportive.

The only people who know about my upcoming surgery are my fiance, his mother and 2 close friends. I will wait to tell my parents closer to my surgery date. I just don't feel like explaining to everyone lap band is not gastric bypass and on and on.

YOu know, it's funny that you say that. Even though I have been an open book and told everyone, part of my explanation without even being asked was that it WASN'T gastric By-pass. not sure why I felt that was necessary but it was almost like a rabid compulsion to make sure they knew the difference...

I am also a "slow loser" but if you look at it you lost 4#per month- THE healthy way- SLOW!! Just think you didnt gain- you lost!!!

Your band did exactly what it was suppose to do!! 1-2pounds per week.

I cant speak for you- but I CANT lose that without my band. In my case my dietary habits were not that bad- the portions were too large but I made healthy food choices MOST of the time- I think that plays a HUGE role in the speed of loss. IF you ate crap , put on your weight then couldnt eat any junk the weight probably is going to fall off of you- Dont know but thats the only explanation/rationale I can come up with for not losing as fast as everyone else!!

HANG IN THERE!!! Its coming off not going on!!!

Hi,

You are absolutely right. I'm not complaining, really. I couldn't have lost (and especially couldn't have kept off) that weight without the band. I'll take slow loss over the place I was (yo-yo dieting ultimately gaining more and more) anyday. Thanks for the encouragement!

Mslynn

At first I wasn't going to tell anyone besides my mother and a few close friends. Then I realized that coworkers would wonder why I stopped stuffing myself during potlucks, and would perhaps support my goals if they knew what I was up to. So everyone who is anyone in my life are aware of my WLS and dietary restrictions. They are my cheering squad!

So as a follow up to my original question...for those of you who didn't tell initially, and decided to tell later when you'd been successful, how did you break the news? Did people get upset with you for not telling them sooner? Would love to here experiences of this.

Thanks,

Mslynn

I've said it before, I wasn't really keeping it a secret, I told friends and family and co-workers. I thought everyone knew! Today I went to lunch with the office girls, we go out on Fridays to a Mexican place (luckily for me, I don't like Mexican and always had a hard time eating there, so it didn't bother me at all not to be eating)...and when I walked in with my friend, 3 of the CSR girls said "I thought you were on vacation, I didn't know you had surgery!", and that's the last of 'everyone I know' knowing LOL. I thought they all knew, but I was the topic of conversation for 30 minutes.. lots of questions, and of course.. the typical "I know someone who had GB and this and this and this..they did great blah blah".

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
