Is it a good time to start yoga yet?

Recommended Posts

I really love Yoga and now that I am on the "losing" end of the weight debacle I want to resume it after a several year hiatus. I just had surgery June 11th, when do you think it is safe to take a yoga class? Has anyone out there found it to be a reliable form of exercise?

From what I have seen, you are supposed to wait 8 weeks before doing yoga.

I woulld definitely talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program. It never hurts to verify what type of activity you should be doing. I am sure you will have time for yoga if it is not Ok now. I have a friend that swears by it! : )

I was told walking is ok right away, swimming when my scabs heal and nothing else until 6 weeks out..... which I presumed included yoga and also more 'dramatic' cardio stuff....So I'm going to wait. I figured I've waited this long.... 4 more weeks won't hurt me.

I am two weeks into my yoga classes and I really love it. I take gyrokinesis (dancer's yoga), pilate's on the Reformer equipment, and a pilate's mat class. I am considering Bikram yoga (hot yoga, makes you SWEAT!) too once I am done with my eight-week session. On the days I am not in the studio, I do yoga on my Wii fit. I am feeling great!

My doctor is really conservative so it's 8 weeks before cardio (I'm dyin' to get back on the elliptical) and 12 weeks before pilates or yoga. It's killing me. I love my pilates.

There is a really gentle yoga called "Heavyweight Yoga" by Abby Lentz. It is a really great way to start out, and it is tailored to meet the needs of heavier people. I love mine, always feel great when I am finished. I will continue it as soon as I am released after surgery. :)

I am now doing yoga 5 days a week. I do gyrokinesis (dancer's yoga), pilates on the Reformer, a pilates mat, and a Hatha yoga class. On the days when I am not in the studio, I practice on the Wii fit. I find it has been very helpful with my mood, flexibility, bowel regularity, as well as strength. I like how I am building muscle without the bulk. Yoga is definitely my exercise of choice!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
